New Study Uncovers Quasars Concealed in Host Galaxies

New study indicates that vast clouds of gas and dust in their host galaxies can occasionally mask supermassive black holes, or quasars, located at the host galaxies.

The astronomical and scientific societies are always in awe of the vast, enigmatic universe that is filled with cosmic wonders. Quasars, incredibly bright and strong cosmic objects believed to be powered by supermassive black holes, are among these amazing and scintillating occurrences. Up until recently, the general consensus was that quasars were independent space objects whose light illuminated the cosmic stage independently of their host galaxies.

New Study: Quasars, The Mysterious Cosmic Lighthouses

Quasars, or quasi-stellar radio emissions, have captured the attention of astronomers ever since they were first discovered in the 1960s. Despite their comparatively tiny dimensions, these cosmic events release intense, focused energy beams that often surpass the brilliance of entire galaxies. For a long time, the general consensus was that quasars functioned independently in space, much like bright stars illuminating a vast heavenly sea, separate from the galaxies that they host.

Extremely brilliant objects known as quasars are created when black holes gorge on material in their surroundings. If there are dense clouds obstructing our view of the quasar, their intense radiation may be prevented. For a long time, astronomers believed that this obscuring material was limited to the quasar’s immediate surroundings, which is a “dusty torus” (or donut) that surrounds it. Galaxies require abundant gas and dust inorder to create stars. Quick star development can produce thick clouds that obfuscate quasars.

Quasars concealed in their host galaxies were difficult to find. Several computational models and observational techniques were used by researchers to identify them. From radio waves to X-rays, astronomers observed things at different wavelengths. They were able to identify minute variations in the host galaxy’s emissions thanks to this thorough technique, which offered hints regarding the existence of a hidden quasar.

Scientists were able to detect unusual emission lines and energy signatures that suggested the presence of a hidden quasar in the heart of the host galaxies by closely examining their spectra. Therefore, the theory was validated by comparing the observed behavior of buried quasars with theoretical expectations through the use of computational models.

The complex interactions between supermassive black holes and the galaxies they inhabit are clarified by this new study.
