Delhi Airport Unveils State-of-the-Art Terminal 1, Boosting Capacity and
Passenger Experience
Delhi, India – August 14, 2024 Marc Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) is pleased to
announce the operationalization of the brand new Terminal 1, effective August 17, 2024. This
marks a significant milestone in DIAL’s Phase 3A expansion project, inaugurated by Prime
Minister Narendra Modi in March.
The opening of Terminal 1 Is a major step forward in enhancing Delhi Airport’s overall capacity.
This state-of-the-art facility will significantly reduce congestion at Terminals 2 and 3, leading to
a smoother and more efficient travel experience for passengers.
Improved Operations and Increased Comfort
SpiceJet will be the first airline to utilize the new terminal, shifting 13 flights starting August
17th. IndiGo will follow suit on September 2nd, transferring 34 flights from Terminals 2 and 3.
“The new Terminal 1 will be a game-changer for Delhi Airport,” said Videh Kumar Jaipuriar,
CEO of DIAL. “This expansion will significantly boost our capacity, allowing us to
accommodate more passengers and flights. We’re confident that passengers will appreciate the
improved amenities, advanced technology, and overall enhanced travel experience.”
One of the key features of Terminal 1 is the focus on passenger convenience. DIAL has
implemented several innovative technologies to streamline the travel process. These include:
Enhanced Amenities and Seamless Connectivity
- Mobile Check-in Service: Passengers can bypass check-in counters and expedite the process
- directly from their smartphones.
- Automated Tray Retrieval System (ATRS): This system automates baggage handling, improving
- efficiency and reducing wait times.
- Individual Carrier System (ICS): This advanced baggage handling system ensures smoother and
- faster luggage sorting.
- Self Baggage Drop (SBD) Kiosks: Passengers can conveniently check-in and tag their own
- luggage at these self-service kiosks.
Beyond operational efficiency, Terminal 1 offers a range of amenities designed to enhance
passenger comfort. These include:
- Expanded Shop and Dine Area: Passengers can choose from a wider variety of retail stores and
food and beverage options. - Prayer Room & Yoga Zone: Catering to the needs of diverse travelers, the terminal provides
dedicated spaces for prayer and relaxation. - Quiet Spaces: Passengers seeking a peaceful environment can find designated quiet areas within
the terminal.
Terminal 1 is well-connected to the Delhi Metro’s Magenta Line, offering a convenient and
efficient public transport option. Additionally, regular bus services by the Delhi Transport
Corporation (DTC) cater to those who prefer surface travel. A shuttle service ensures seamless
movement between Terminals 1, 2, and 3 for passengers with connecting flights.
Cityside and Airside Developments
For a smooth travel experience beyond the terminal itself, DIAL has also focused on cityside
developments. These include:
Expanded Parking Facilities: Increased parking capacity will accommodate more vehicles and
ease congestion.
Realigned Pick-up and Drop-off Lanes: Streamlined traffic flow will improve the experience for
arriving and departing passengers.
On the airside, a redesigned apron with 82 Code C stands, dual taxiways, and advanced
technological upgrades ensures efficient and safe aircraft handling. This contributes to faster
aircraft turnaround times and improved air traffic flow.
Replacing the Old Terminal 1
The opening of the new Terminal 1 comes after the closure of the old facility in late June
following a roof collapse incident. DIAL expresses its deepest condolences to the families
affected by this tragic event. A high-level committee consisting of structural engineers from IIT
Delhi is currently investigating the incident.
A Brighter Future for Delhi Airport
The opening of Terminal 1 marks a significant step forward for Delhi Airport. This expansion
project not only increases capacity but also elevates the passenger experience through innovative
technologies, enhanced amenities, and improved connectivity. With this state-of-the-art facility,
Delhi Airport is well-positioned to accommodate future growth and continue to be a major
aviation hub in India.
