Nitish Kumar is an Indian politician who has been active in Bihar politics. He is a member of the Janata Dal (United). Nitish Kumar has served as Bihar’s Chief Minister on multiple occasions. He became Chief Minister in 2005 and remained in office until 2014. However, in 2014, he resigned, accepting moral responsibility for his party’s poor performance in the general election. Recently, Nitish Kumar has been shifting from one party to the other, and playing a political game.
What did Nitish do
Nitish Kumar, the Chief Minister of Bihar, on January 29th 2024 submitted his resignation to Governor Raj. Bihar’s days-long political suspense ended, and the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) returned. Shortly after resigning, he met with the Governor again to stake a claim to form the government with the BJP’s support, echoing Bihar’s political moves in 2017 when he severed ties with the Grand Alliance.
What Nitish has to say
Nitish Kumar criticized the INDIA bloc, and said that the opposition parties named the alliance for Lok Sabha polls as INDIA (Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance), without asking or consulting him about it. The Janata Dal(United) Supremo, further criticized the INDIA bloc and said that they haven’t done a single thing and haven’t even decided which party will contest how many seats. Nitish even said that it was their behavior due to which he left them and came back, where he was initially.
He assured the people that no matter what, he will continue to work for the people of Bihar. He expressed his happiness to the reporters, regarding coming back to the party where he was earlier, and said that he wishes that now it would remain the same. People of Bihar have trusted Nitish Kumar to be their CM for a long time and it seems that it is the very reason that come what may, whichever party he makes an alliance with, he won’t leave his post
Nitish’s relations with Tejashwi Yadav
The relations between Nitish Kumar and the Deputy Chief Minister, Tejashwi Yadav have been sour recently. The RJD leader, Tejashwi Yadav had made a comment on Nitish Yadav, saying that whatever he did in 17 months, Nitish Kumar couldn’t do in 17 years. Nitish Kumar further reacted to it by saying that Tejashwi Yadav “ Talks nonsense”.
Nitish Kumar said that Tejashwi was a child at that time. They shall be questioned about how the situation was before 2005 . He made comments on unemployment that existed under Tejashwi’s rule , and how his own government is now providing jobs.
History of RJD and JDU
1) Alliance and Collaboration:
In the past, the RJD and JDU had been allies in Bihar. The two parties, along with the Indian National Congress, formed the ‘Mahagathbandhan’ (Grand Alliance) prior to the 2015 Bihar Legislative Assembly elections. This alliance defeated the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the state elections. Nitish Kumar, the leader of the JDU, was elected Chief Minister of Bihar with the support of the RJD and the Congress.
2) Rift and breakup:
However, in July 2017, Nitish Kumar abruptly resigned as Chief Minister, ending the alliance with the RJD. The split was primarily due to differences between Nitish Kumar and RJD leader Lalu Prasad Yadav, particularly over corruption charges against Yadav and his family members. Nitish Kumar later formed a new government with the support of the BJP.
3)Changing alliances:
Political dynamics are fluid, and alliances can shift in response to changing circumstances. It is critical to remember that political scenarios can change, and parties may reconsider their alliances in response to electoral or strategic concerns.
