On August 20 2024, former President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama rallied their support for Kamala Harris. The power couple’s speeches in Democratic National Convention (DNC), Chicago aimed to encourage voters to back Harris in her historic bid for presidency against Republican Donald Trump.

America’s first black president Barack Obama took to the stage calling for change. He appealed to the nation to reject “four more years of bluster and bumbling and chaos.” He said, “Unfortunately, we heard that movie before and the sequel is always worse.” Obama sang Harris’ praises, declaring to those assembled “America is ready for a new chapter. That is the difference, we are done with the old guard and feel that it is time for a President Kamala Harris.

Obama also gave President Joe Biden a shoutout, after widespread consternation among Democratic allies about his prospects against Trump steered him to the exit. “History will indeed remember Joe Biden as the president who defended democracy,” he said. The delegates unanimously chanted that they love Joe.

An Empowering Message by Michelle Obama

Michelle Obama then took the stage and greeted her husband before delivering a speech filled with hope. “America, hope is making a comeback,” she declared. She also warned against Trump, noting that he might distort reality and distort against Kamala Harris.

To roaring a applause, she remarked, “His narrow and limited view of the world made him feel threatened by the existence of two hard-working, highly educated, successful people who also happened to be Black.” She also challenged Trump, saying, “Who’s going to tell him that the job he’s currently seeking might just be one of those ‘Black jobs’?” This statement referenced Trump’s previous comments about immigration and competition for jobs, particularly concerning Black Americans.

Kamala Harris’ Historic Campaign

From a rally in Milwaukee, Kamala Harris virtually joined the convention. She recently established a lot of momentum on the campaign trail, setting fundraising records and drawing big crowds. In Chicago, the delegates brandished signs that echoed those displayed at her rally: ‘FREEDOM’.  Harris accused Trump of no longer caring about the Supreme Court’s dismantling of Roe v. Wade, which had been upholding abortion rights for decades since 2022 in her speech. Bad behavior absolutely should be punished, she continued before vowing that Trump will pay at the polls in November.

Abortion rights have emerged as a top flashpoint for Democrats this election cycle, with Harris making her bill the official position of multiple candidates in an increasingly crowded primary field.

Bipartisan Cooperation and Roadblocks

Republicans who have distanced themselves from Trump also made a rare statement heard at the DNC. Stephanie Grisham, who was former White House press secretary, underscored her transition from a supporter of Trump to critic.  Mesa Mayor John Giles declared, “John McCain’s Republican Party is gone and we don’t owe a damn thing to what has been left behind,” calling for moderation within the party. Trump has turned off some conservative voters, Dems hope to attract. But the key for Harris is getting these voters to turn out and vote for her, not stay home or go with other candidates.

Protests Over US Support for Israeli Action in Gaza

Several arrests were made during a protest outside of Chicago’s Israeli consulate that turned ugly. Most speakers at the DNC avoided talking about the sensitive topic. Senator Bernie Sanders was the only speaker who advocated for peace and called for an immediate ceasefire in the region.

The DNC line-up, which included big–name speakers, showed a party united around change: strong calls for Harris who was led by Obama. With the election over the corner, that is a critical moment for to consolidate their support against Trump
