Making Workplace your Personal Runway
Turns out that the newest Gen-Z obsession is in town, and this time, it is to romanticise office work! From Bella Hadid’s striped formal shirts to Jahnvi Kapoor’s sexy pants-suit; from TikTok to boardrooms; personal style, individuality, and comfort that we got used to during remote work is making waves again; the chic way.
The workplace fashion scene is becoming more diverse, inclusive, and sophisticated. With a tinge of laid-back injected with flair and confidence, say hello to the “Office-Siren” look that is around; and we are here for it.
Post-pandemic, workplace dress codes have seemingly become more comfortable due to the blurred lines between home and workwear during Covid-19. The classic corporate style has seemed to take a step back. Since most businesses had to close their doors due to the COVID-19 pandemic, most of us missed out on real-time working. Now that we’re all back at it though, who wants to show up to work looking drab and dull?
What is the Office-Siren Trend?
With the advent of Y2K fashion, the “Office-Siren” Trend is yet another element of it that emphasises specifically on work outfits. What typically is a lovechild of a main character in a Y2K workplace movie with a dash of ‘old-money’ and ‘clean-girl’, is supposed to make one feel more confident and put together at work making them embrace style and professionalism at the same time.
Increase in Corporate Productivity
Now, here’s the thing; the newer generations have no idea about the functioning of corporate life. Especially with “work from home” being pretty much omnipresent for a while, their notion of work has been “Devil Wears Prada” and “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” (it’s nothing like it). So, dressing well can be one of the escapes for a more ‘movie-like’ life or just a step towards making work more bearable everyday; and due to the rife in Y2K fashion, the “Office-Siren” trend does not really come across as a shock and just makes sense.
Additionally, being put together and feeling confident in what you wear has over the years also proven in making one more productive; an extremely pivotal requirement for work. Looking good and well put together in proper outfits can increase one’s sense of self-worth and confidence. People tend to have more self-assurance in their talents and abilities when they are satisfied with their physical appearance. They may tackle activities and obstacles with greater confidence.
The term “enclothed cognition” also exists that refers to the idea that what a person wears might have an effect on their psychological processes. There is evidence that people’s ability to concentrate and perform at their best is improved when they dress appropriately.
(It’s safe to say that this time, it’s not just some baseless trend and the Gen-Zs know what they are doing by channelling their inner Andie Andersons at work!)
How to Wear It?
Picture Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein runway looks in the early 2000’s. The objective is to exude an air of confidence and daring without sacrificing ease or authenticity.
Tailored Blazers, Flared Formal Pants, Skirts with Fitted Shirts and Trenchcoats are just a few of the must-haves to be the sexy siren at your workplace. Even though a flawlessly tailored suit will always attract attention without fail, it should be noted that power suits extend beyond the conventional pants and suit sets. Any ensemble that is meticulously tailored and exudes a powerful and confident vibe can be considered a power suit.
Choose a muted colour scheme consisting of blacks, greys, beige, and whites; many people also prefer navy blue. Add some texture and pattern to it; stripes seem to be a cult favourite for this trend.
Ditch the contact lenses. Megan Fox, Angelina Jolie, and many more sported stylish prescription glasses during the ’90s and ’00s red carpet fashion. Accessories can also elevate the look, bringing in a more crafted but fun vibe. With belts, minimal jewellery and wrist watches, you’ll look ready to attend meetings and catch up for drinks after it.
Recently, Bella Hadid was seen dressed in a fitted striped shirt with black trousers and glasses, seemingly expressing her inner fiery office siren while Ananya Pandey opted for a navy blue striped corset and skirt co-ord. Try to keep the hair sleek with muted makeup. Do not be scared of occasionally going all out though with bold lips or smokey eyes. The trick, at the end of the day, is to balance it out.
A signature office tote with stilettos or pumps, and you’re good to go out that door feeling like a boss lady.
The main nut to crack however, is to feel at ease, and to fearlessly remember that you own the world!
