Olympic 2024: France qualifies for the semi-final after beating Argentina

France confirmed the semi-finals by defeating Argentina in the quarter-finals of the Paris Olympics 2024. The hosts beat Albicelestes 1-0 at the Stade Matmut Atlantique Stadium. Philippe Mateta scored the winning goal for his team.

Argentina defeated France in the World Cup in Qatar, 2022. After that loss, France faced  ridicule by the Argentines. Since then, the rivalry commenced between France and Argentina. But this time the French boys responded to that loss in the quarter-finals of the Olympics 2024. However, Argentina had three different players in the Qatar World Cup final. They are – Nicolás Otamendi, Julián Álvarez and Enzo Fernández.

Argentina vs France match timeline

Javier Mascherano’s players dominated the entire match in Bordeaux on Friday. However, Albicelestes did not get the desired goal in the match. From the very beginning of the game, the sky-white jersey holders fell behind one goal. In the starting 5th minute of the match, Jean-Philippe Mateta headed the ball into the net from Michael Ollise’ cross. At the end, that one goal made a huge difference in the overall match.

Argentina had the ball almost 70 percent of the time throughout the match on their legs. Argentina took 16 shots, and France took 10. Argentina had four shots on target. On the contrary, France took only two shots on target. In the end, Argentina had to leave the field with a 1-0 loss.

After match clashes between teams

The audience burst into cheers after the last flute market in Bordeaux. The French players also enjoyed the celebration in front of the host audience. Argentinian media outlet TYC Sports claimed that French midfielder Enzo Millot shouted and made obscene gestures at the Argentine bench during the celebration.

Such behavior annoys the players of Argentina.  Then an ugly conflict began between both the teams. The players, coaches and officials also got involved. After that chaos was also seen in the tunnel outside the field. Later, however, the French players returned to the field and celebrated with the spectators.

As the players collided, excitement spread to the spectators as well. However, due to the police’s cautious stance, the situation did not escalate. Also, Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez came under fire for singing racist songs against France.

Other qualifier match

In another match of the day, Egypt defeated Paraguay by 5-4 in a tiebreaker and reached the semi-finals. They will play against France in the last four matches. Egypt conceded a goal in 71 minutes in the last eight matches. However, they repaid that goal two minutes before the end of the scheduled time.

At the end of 90 minutes, the game was tied at 1-1 and went into extra time. Neither team scored in that extra period. Later, Egypt defeated Paraguay 5-4 in the tiebreaker and advanced to the semis.
