The nominations for 2024 Oscars are finally in, and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer has continued to dominate its presence in 13 categories, making it the film with the most nominations this year.

Here’s everything you need to know before the big night.

Where are the Oscars being held?

The 96th Academy Awards will be held on Sunday, March 10, at 8 p.m. EST. The ceremony will be broadcasted live from the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.

The broadcast will be telecasted on ABC and can be streamed on ABC.com or the ABC app. Those without cable can watch the ceremony via live TV streaming services like Hulu + Live TV and YouTube TV.

Last year’s Oscars

“Dreams do come true”, an emotional Michelle Yeoh told her fellow Academy Award attendees at the 2023 Oscars, as she became the first Asian woman in history – and only the second woman of colour – to win the Best Actress award for her performance in Everything Everywhere All at Once. The film was the most celebrated of the night, sweeping seven awards in total. In a similar history-making moment, Ruth E. Carter became the first Black woman to achieve two Oscars, as she accepted the award for Best Costume Design for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Which movie is nominated for the most Oscars?

Christopher Nolan’s film Oppenheimer rules the 2024 Oscar nominations with 13 nods, including Best Director, Best Picture, and Best Actor for actor Cillian Murphy. Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things comes second in place with 11 nominations, followed by Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon at 10 and Greta Gerwig’s Barbie at eight nominations.

Who is hosting?

Jimmy Kimmel, late-night talk show host and producer, will make his return to host the Oscars for the fourth time—a decision based on the acclaim around Barbie. He hosted the Oscars for the first time in 2017, when La La Land was accidentally announced as the Best Picture over Moonlight. Kimmel returned to host in 2018 and then again last year.

What records might be broken?

In the category of Best Actress, Killers of the Flower Moon‘s star, Lily Gladstone could become the first Native American woman to win the award. She would also be the first person of Native American heritage to ever achieve an acting Oscar. If Anatomy of a Fall‘s Sandra Hüller—who also stars in Best Picture nominee The Zone of Interest—bags the prize instead, she would be the first German-born actor to win the category after more than 60 years.

On the other hand, Emma Stone notching a dual win for both producing and starring in Poor Things would make her the second woman in cinema history to take home the awards for Best Actress and Best Picture for the same movie. Meanwhile, Martin Scorsese being 81 years old, could make history as the oldest Best Director winner. He is the most-nominated living filmmaker in the category with 10 nominations.

A Best Picture award for Justine Triet’s Anatomy of a Fall, Celine Song’s Past Lives or Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest, would mark the second time that a non-English language movie came out on top in the particular category—a feat achieved first by Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite in 2020.
In terms of most Oscar wins by a single film, Oppenheimer remains in a position to potentially break—or possibly tie—the record of 11 held by 1997’s Titanic, and 2003’s The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.
