Outrage Over May 2020 Elephant Death in Palakkad Overshadow Silence on 2024 Wayanad Landslide Tragedy, Claiming 400 Lives

In a tragic incident in Kerala’s Palakkad district 2020, a pregnant elephant died after consuming a pineapple filled with firecrackers. This heartbreaking event has sparked widespread solidarity and outrage among people and animal rights activists. The elephant had ventured into a field in search of food when it encountered the explosive-laden pineapple. The resulting injuries to its jaws prevented it from eating, ultimately leading to its death.

Farmers in the region often use such explosive traps to protect their fields from wild animals. This practice has raised serious ethical and safety concerns, especially in light of this incident.

Adding to the tragedy, certain prominent individuals attempted to manipulate the incident for communal purposes by falsely claiming it occurred in Malappuram district. This misrepresentation aimed to incite communal tensions, overshadowing the genuine tragedy and the need for addressing the underlying issues.

These figures have shown a notable lack of concern for other critical issues affecting the state. For instance, despite the devastating Wayanad landslide 2024 that claimed 400 lives, there has been a conspicuous absence of effort from these individuals to investigate or raise awareness about the disaster. Their actions suggest a troubling tendency to exploit opportunities for communalization rather than addressing real problems facing Kerala.

This incident underscores the urgent need for stricter regulations on the use of explosive traps in agriculture and a collective effort to address communalization attempts that detract from genuine issues.
