The United States overtook China on the medal list after winning gold in the final event of the Paris Olympics. In Paris, China and the United States won a total of 40 gold each. However, the USA is on top of the medal list as it is ahead of China in winning silver and bronze. With this, the country that has won the most gold in the history of the Olympics has finished four consecutive Olympics on top.
The United States won a total 126 medals, including 40 gold, 44 silver and 42 bronze. China won 91 medals including 40 gold, 27 silver, 24 bronze. Asian country Japan finished in third with 20 golds. The team won a total of 45 medals including 12 silver and 13 bronze.
Three years ago, these three countries were also in the top three in Tokyo. The United States became the first to win 39 gold medals at the Tokyo Olympics. Second-placed China won 38 golds, while hosts Japan finished third with their own record 27 golds.
