Piyush Goyal meets US President Joe Biden at APEC

At the welcome event for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) on Thursday, US President Joe Biden and Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal had a meeting.

Piyush Goyal invited to attend APEC Summit

On Wednesday, international leaders attending the APEC Summit were invited to a welcoming reception given by US President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden. Piyush Goyal received an invitation to the San Francisco APEC Summit.

There are 21 members of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation alliance. India is not among them, though. It has applied to become a member of the alliance in 1991. Although most members support India’s participation, others have voiced opposition, citing the nation’s track record of economic changes and accusing it of having “protectionist instincts.” India was excluded from the grouping because of a membership freeze that was in place from 1997 to 2012 and was not renewed.

Subsequently, Piyush Goyal informed news agency ANI that Joe Biden had wished Prime Minister Narendra Modi a happy birthday and said the nations that suffer the most from environmental deterioration are those who were not initially at fault.

Meanwhile, Mr. Goyal had a meeting with Janet Yellen, the US Secretary of Treasury. “Wonderful to meet the US Secretary of the Treasury, @SecYellen,” Yellen wrote in a post published on X.

Juan Carlos Mathews, Peru’s Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, met with the Commerce Minister, who is now on a four-day visit to the US. The two leaders talked about the ongoing discussions for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Peru and India.

Piyush Goyal also had a meeting with Alex Rogers, President of Qualcomm Technology Licensing and Global Affairs. Goyal wrote, “I met Mr. Alex Rogers, President, Qualcomm Technology Licensing & Global Affairs,” in a post that was shared on X. talked about the many chances for cooperation that India’s robust innovation landscape and quickly changing semiconductor ecosystem offer.

Additionally, he had a meeting with Fumio Kishida, the prime minister of Japan, during the 2023 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Leaders’ Meeting.He also went to the IPEF Investment Forum and the Partnership for Global Infrastructure Investment (PGII). He praised the initiative and US President Amos Hochstein’s senior advisor, Gina Raimondo, for their work.
