PM Narendra Modi spoke to Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Ukrainian President a few hours after speaking to the Russian President, Vladimir Putin. The Prime Minister’s conversation with the two leaders comes in the backdrop of Vlamdir Putin’s reelection as the President and no sign of the Russia-Ukraine war de-escalating. The two leaders allegedly said they see India as a peacemaker and have invited him to visit their countries after the Lok Sabha General elections.
PM Modi had last gone to Russia in 2018 and this time congratulated Russian President Vladimir Putin in a telephone conversation for his “landslide” victory. Within a few hours, he also spoke to the Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy. While having a conversation with Zelenskyy this year, the PM stayed diplomatic with first people-centric approach and said that his government will continue to do everything within its means to support a peaceful solution to the conflict.

PM Modi discussed ways to strengthen the India-Ukraine partnership and reiterated the nation’s people-centric approach. He calls for dialogue and diplomacy as a resolution for the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. Zelenskyy appreciated India’s continued humanitarian assistance to the Ukrainian people and agreed to remain in touch.
In May 2023, Zelenskyy met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Japan and it was the first in-person meeting between the two leaders since the start of the Russia-Ukraine war last year.
Phone call between Modi and Putin
Today, PM Modi dialled the Russian President, Vladimir Putin, to congratulate him on his re-election to the top office. During their telephonic conversation, both of them agreed to increase the efforts towards expanding the ‘Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership’ between India and Russia. Vladimir Putin won the Presidential elections again with a total of 87.17% votes for him. Putin has already served for 4 terms as the Russian President in 2000, 2004, 2012, 2018 and now 2024.
Ukraine has now urged the US Congress to unblock a $60 billion aid package, which has been stalled due to political infighting. The delays came as a “shock” for Ukrainian officials according to their Foreign Minister.US Defence Secretary, Austin said that Russia has wasted almost USD 211 billion on war against its neighbour. Austin also said that if Putin is successful in Ukraine, he will not stop there.
India has not drawn up any peace plan or made any specific offer to the two in order to mediate but has long maintained its relationships and will be happy to facilitate any international peace effort. Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to India for their support to Ukraine and providing them humanitarian aid. He also invited Modi to Ukraine and hoped that India would attend the inaugural Global Peace Summit in Switzerland. Ukraine also open heartedly wishes to welcome Indian students back to the Ukrainian educational institution.
