In a significant development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended an apology following the collapse of a statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in the Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra. The statue, which was unveiled in December last year during Navy Day celebrations, was erected to honor Shivaji Maharaj’s historical contributions to maritime defense and his pivotal role in establishing a naval force to protect the coastline of Maharashtra during his reign.

Addressing a gathering in Maharashtra’s Palghar district, Modi expressed his deep regret over the incident, which had stirred emotional responses across the state. He underscored the profound reverence with which Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is regarded by millions, stating that for many in Maharashtra, Shivaji is not merely a historical figure but a revered icon. “For us, Shivaji Maharaj embodies our cultural ethos and values. He is more than a name or a king; he is our revered figure,” Modi remarked, emphasizing the emotional connection that the people of Maharashtra feel towards the warrior king. Modi sought forgiveness both from the deity himself and from those who venerate Shivaji Maharaj, acknowledging the hurt caused by the statue’s collapse.

During his speech, Modi also addressed the broader context of respect for historical figures, mentioning that while some individuals continuously criticize figures like Veer Savarkar, they fail to acknowledge the sentiments of those who hold these figures in high regard. “There are those who repeatedly disparage Veer Savarkar, yet they do not consider offering an apology for the offense caused,” Modi observed, highlighting a perceived inconsistency in how certain historical figures are treated.

Following the collapse of the statue, which was meant to be a tribute to Shivaji Maharaj’s contributions to maritime defense, the Maharashtra state government promptly announced an investigation. A joint technical committee, spearheaded by the Indian Navy and including representatives from the state government as well as technical experts, has been established to probe the incident.

In addition to addressing the statue collapse, Modi used the opportunity to emphasize Maharashtra’s pivotal role in India’s growth and development. He pointed out that a strong and developed Maharashtra is vital to achieving a robust and prosperous India. “Maharashtra’s growth is integral to our vision for a developed nation. Over the past decade, we have implemented numerous initiatives aimed at enhancing the state’s infrastructure and economic capabilities,” Modi stated. He underscored the strategic importance of Maharashtra in India’s broader developmental agenda, noting that the state’s progress directly impacts the country’s overall growth trajectory.

The Prime Minister’s remarks came during the foundation stone-laying ceremony for the Vadhvan Port project in Palghar district, a massive infrastructure undertaking aimed at boosting Maharashtra’s maritime capabilities and economic prospects. With an investment of ₹76,000 crore, the Vadhvan Port project is set to become a significant hub for trade and commerce, enhancing the state’s position as a key player in India’s maritime sector. Modi highlighted the project’s potential to unlock economic opportunities, generate employment. He emphasized that the development of such infrastructure projects is crucial for harnessing the state’s full potential and contributing to India’s economic growth.

Over the past decade, the Indian government has made substantial investments in infrastructure projects across Maharashtra, aiming to elevate the state’s status as an economic powerhouse. From road and rail networks to ports and industrial corridors, these projects are designed to enhance connectivity, foster economic growth, and create jobs. The Vadhvan Port project is part of this broader strategy, with a focus on expanding the state’s capabilities in maritime trade and logistics.

The recent events in Maharashtra underscore the government’s commitment to respecting cultural sentiments and advancing the state’s development agenda. As Maharashtra continues to evolve as a critical player in India’s growth story, these efforts signal a commitment to both honoring the past and building for the future.
