The Prime Minister of India, Mr. Narendra Modi is on a visit to the country of Brunei now. Following this he will also visit Singapore.
What Is The Focus Behind This Visit?
The focus of this visit is to deepen ties between the countries and establish stronger relations. Despite there being diplomatic ties between India and Brunei since the last 40 years, this is the first time that an Indian PM is visiting the country. Following this he will also visit Singapore where he will hold discussions with Prime Minister Lawrence Wong.
The Bilateral Relations
His visit to Brunei comes after an invitation by the monarch Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah. The visit is expected to strengthen their bilateral ties and foster cooperation in defense, trade, energy and safe technology as well. The visit to Singapore too is expected to enhance bilateral relations in terms of trade and investment, defense and educational ties.
Where Will The Countries Focus?
It is also expected that the countries will sign several MOUs and focus on areas such as cooperation, digitization, health and others. The emphasis will also be on renewable and green energy and semiconductors. Singapore is also India’s largest trade partner within the multi member body- ASEAN (Association of South-East Asian Nations). It is a significant source of FDI for the country. They will also share views on various global and regional issues of importance.
India’s interactions with Brunei and Singapore are in close line with what the ‘Act East Policy’ is all about. These are expected to economically benefit India and improve its global standing too.
