While the winter weather has finally provided us with an escape from the hot, dry and moist temperatures, there also comes an increased risk of respiratory infections, including the notorious walking pneumonia.
Recently, Mid-day reported that the Union health ministry stated the seven walking pneumonia cases reported at the AIIMS – Delhi was not a cause for worry. Despite the cases detected from April to September this year, health experts recommend that parents and elders take precautionary measures as respiratory illnesses are rising, prompting a need to protect our lungs during the cold season.
What is Walking Pneumonia?
Walking pneumonia also referred to as atypical pneumonia, is a milder form of pneumonia caused commonly by bacteria like Mycoplasma pneumoniae (Source: Each Breath.) Unlike pneumonia, individuals with walking pneumonia are unlikely to showcase severe symptoms, allowing you to carry out daily tasks without hospitalisation. That being said, the respiratory illness can still make those diagnosed feel miserable as it is commonly accompanied by a cold, fever, chest pain, mild chills, headache and more.
In the article by Mid-Day, Dr Subhash Hira, professor of global health at the University of Washington and a member of WHO consultative group for future pandemic preparation, explains that “Walking pneumonia appearing in much larger numbers during this winter is real.” He also informs that several other factors, such as the poor high air quality index, the fall in temperatures, and unseasonal rain, play a role in adversely impacting respiratory infections, which start with common cold and cough, gradually infecting the upper and lower respiratory tracts.
To look after your respiratory health this winter, here are some important practices to follow:
Boost Your Immune System
As a precautionary measure, strengthening your immune system is the first step to defend yourself against most respiratory infections. Ensure you get adequate sleep, and consume a well-balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals. Regular exercise, and staying hydrated significantly help in developing a strong immune system. Avoid smoking or consuming any other products containing tobacco. Incorporate immune-boosting meals like citrus fruits rich in Vitamin C, leafy greens, and yoghurt into your diet.
Follow Good Respiratory Hygiene
An obvious precaution but very easy to forget. Basic hygiene practices play a very important role in preventing the spread of infections. Wash and sanitise your hands regularly, especially after coughing or sneezing. Try not to touch your face, particularly your eyes, nose, and mouth, as that will reduce the transfer of bacteria from your hands to your respiratory system. Frequent showers and clean clothing can also help reduce the spread of infection. When out in public, cover your mouth and nose with a tissue and consider wearing a mask to protect yourself and others from potential exposure.
Seek Medical Attention
If you are experiencing a persistent cough, find difficulty in breathing, or any other other respiratory symptoms, seek medical attention promptly. Get a flu vaccine every year that can help prevent getting pneumonia caused by the flu. Consult with your doctor about getting a pneumonia vaccine as there is no cure for viral or mycoplasma pneumonia.
By practising these practical tips, you can significantly avoid the likelihood of contracting walking pneumonia, which will guarantee a healthier winter season for yourself and those around you. As you begin to enjoy the cool and crisp air of the winter season, keep in mind that prevention is key, and by simply maintaining good respiratory hygiene while focusing on boosting your immune system with healthy meals and seeking medical attention when necessary, you can easily tackle winter respiratory infections.
