Junior Doctors ahead of agitation for justice

On September 15 2024 the protesting junior doctors said that they continue to be diligent in their aim to acquire justice for the doctor raped and murdered at the R.G Kar hospital. Furthermore, there was another attempt that fell through to solve the deadlock with the state government.

While the state health department was in Salt Lake, for the sixth consecutive day, the protestants of doctors continued their sit-in outside ‘ Swasthya Bhavan’ despite the consistency of rain.

“ No matter how much we are devastated by the constant adversities, we are very diligent in our aim to attain justice for our sister. Despite the fact that some of us are not feeling well, we have gone through sleepless nights clinging to the streets in the harsh conditions and bad weather”, a protesting doctor said.

On Saturday Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee made a sudden visit to the site where the doctors were in agitation and assured them that their demands would be addressed. Moreover the proposed meeting failed utterly after the agitating doctors were asked to leave after waiting for three hours outside the CM’s residence, said the protesters.

Another protesting medic claimed that they had consented to attend the meeting without any live streaming or video recording as requested by the Chief Minister, but after informing about the same to the Minister of State for Health, Chandrima Bhattacharya, they were asked to vacate the area because it was too late.

“ In this situation, we all must be strong and patient. This fight isn’t just ours but it is for the 10 crore people of West Bengal. The arrest of Sandip Ghosh and the Officer-in-Charge of Tala Police Station confirm our view that attempts were made to cover up this heinous crime” he said.

The CBI’s hold over the case  

On Saturday evening, the CBI, who is inquiring the rape- murder case included charges of tampering with evidence against former R.G Kar hospital Principal Sandip Ghosh, who currently in the judicial custody and Abhijt Mondal of Tala police station, the officer-in -charge was also arrested, with charges of misleading the investigation and making alterations to the crime scene.

The demands put down by the junior doctors

The junior doctors who have halted their work since August 9, are demanding the suspension of Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal, Health Secretary N.S. Nigam, Doctor of Health Services and Director of Medical Education for “falling through” their duties in the scene of the R.G. Kar incident.

Also, they have seeked adequate safety and security measures for all the female health professionals in the state.

This agitation in this issue seems to be an unending process as the protesting medics stated that they have been conducting temporary clinics at the demonstration sites which receives upto 400- 500 patients on a daily basis.

The body of the victim was found in the seminar Hall of R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has been operating the inquiries for the rape and murder of the women doctor, which was followed by a Calcutta High Court order.
