Congress MP Rahul Gandhi arrives in Assam to meet flood victims and will also visit Manipur to speak about the ethnic violence taking place there. He lands at Kumbhirgram airport in Silchar and visits a relief camp in Lakhipur.

In the course of his stay in Assam ,Rahul Gandhi will meet people affected by the floods that have been through the state of destruction. Around 22.70 lakh people in 28 districts of Assam had an impact from the severe floods.

This visit of Gandhi is his first in the Northeast since he became a leader of the opposition in Lok Sabha. During this hypercritical critical time he aims at evaluating the situation on ground and to mainly also provide support to those who were affected by the natural disaster. It’s expected that Gandhi will be meeting local officials and flood victims to get a detailed understanding of their obstacles and needs.

After his visit to Assam, Rahul Gandhi is expected to fly to Manipur, where there is a severe ethnic violence going on. He will visit a relief camp in Lakhipur and have a conversation with the people about their issues and find solutions. Since 3 May 2023 the state has been facing this violence that has already led to around 200 deaths.

Rahul Gandhi will reach the Jiribam district of Manipur where there has been a recent report on ethnic violence. Strict security arrangements have been made in Jiribam and violation of these security measures would lead to legal actions against that specific individual/ organisation.

Meghachandra gave a detailed outline of Gandhi’s schedule of this visit, “He will fly from Delhi to Silchar, then proceed to Jiribam district. After visiting relief camps there, he will return to Silchar airport and fly to Imphal. From Imphal, he will travel to Churachandpur district and Moirang in Bishnupur district to visit additional relief camps”. He will also be meeting Governor Anusuiya Uikey in Imphal before leaving Manipur. Another congress leader noted “We appreciate his decision to visit the state after assuming the role of the Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha”.

The Leader’s itinerary shows his commitment in dealing with both immediate crises of the regions. This visit of Rahul Gandhi should give moral support to those who have been affected and understand the problems while also providing long term solutions.

The Rift of Congress and BJP on Rahul Gandhi’s Visit

While all the planning was taking place, it resulted in a war of words between the Congress and BJP.

Congress party leader Jairam Ramesh attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his visit to Russia and not going to Manipur ever since the ethnic violence began in the state.

“Today the non–biological PM goes to Moscow while the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha heads for Assam and Manipur. Of course the drumbeaters of the non-biological PM have claimed that he stopped the Russia-Ukraine war for some time. Presumably, this Moscow trip will lead to even more bizarre claims” he tweeted.
