Risk of fatty triglycerides are likely to occur more in a human body with lack of sleep. It is a type of blood cholesterol which increases the risk of heart diseases and risk of stroke.

A study by Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) in the US states that maintaining sleep hygiene is extremely important to have good health. Going to bed early and putting the phone away at night, helps in relaxing your body and giving it a proper rest.

Importance of a good sleep habit can help in promoting overall good health, said Brooke Shafer, a postdoctoral researcher at the Sleep, Chronobiology and Health Laboratory at the OHSU School of Nursing, published in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism.

Thirty people were selected for the study, with an equal number of males and females. With a Body Mass Index (BMI) of more than 25, each of them was classified as overweight.

The participants were given a dose of melatonin, a hormone that the brain produces in response to darkness. Their time difference between the onset of melatonin and average sleep timing was measured by the researchers.

They were divided into 2 groups: Group 1 consisted of the people who slept longer between melatonin onset and sleep and Group 2 had those who slept shorter.

Those who slept shorter were technically linked to worse health conditions in the future.

A lot of potential negative health markers could be seen in the group that went to bed closer to the melatonin start.

People who slept poorly showed more levels of fatty triglycerides and abdominal fat, as well as more scores of metabolic syndrome compared to the ones who slept better.

The researchers also said that lack of sleep can lead to greater resting heart rates, glucose levels and overall fat percentage of the body.
