Democratic Governance is where the people of a country rule and where citizens are free to flourish in each and every aspect of life, be it social, cultural, economical, political, ideological etc.
Today, on the International day of Democracy, Social Welfare Development in collaboration with civil society of Bengaluru organized a record breaking event, captivating the presence of lakhs of people from different walks of life, joining the 2,500 Km long human chain. Starting from 9:00 am the event was to be concluded by 10:00 am as per the officials. Karnataka Government has come up with a website called www.democracydaykarnataka.in, from where citizens can register for an individual, family, civic society or as a ngo. To fabricate this record breaking event and capture the experience, a team from world record, London, joined as spectators of the celebration.
The commencement of thisf human chain begins from Bidar to Chamarajanagar, covering 31 districts of karnataka. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah with Ministers and Officials gave a green flag to the participants from Vidhana Soudha by holding forth the preamble of the Constitution.
A human chain signifying the equality, unity, companionship and an inclusive environment for people from differently abled and LGBTQ+ communities as well. Students, Women, Men, and Civil workers (doctors,nurses,clerks,guards,sweepers)etc participated in the making of the longest human chain in history. As a symbol of moving towards a sustainable and green living, over 10 lakh saplings were to be planted by the partakers, for which they will be awarded by a certificate. Various artists performed in the event.
History of International Day of Democracy
International Day of Democracy was enacted by a consensus of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in November,2007 and the First Democracy Day was celebrated on 15th of September,2008 with a purpose of promoting democratic governance all over the world. Year by year the United Nations has presented ‘Artificial Intelligence as a good tool for good governance’ as the theme of democracy day, 2024. António Guterres, the General Secretary of the UN, quoted that AI “If left unchecked” its dangers “could have serious implications for democracy,peace and stability.He in his statement highlighted how AI has the potential to support and strengthen democracy in the world.
Human chain depicting the largest democracy – India
India is said to be the largest democracy in the world with the highest living population in our country. To improve and magnify the power of democracy, we as a citizen need to take active steps in ensuring our participation in the process of building a democratic country. It’s always the people of a country who have to combat the challenges in the making and restoring of democracy.There are multiple factors for example – Ensuring the voice of the people to be heard, where the identity of a person is respected, Equal opportunities for everyone to grow, etc. In conclusion a country where an individual is provided with the freedom to learn, express, and assist in the development of the country.
