Timeline Of the Terror Attacks
15 years ago, the Lashkar-e Taiba terrorists stormed into Mumbai with the sole aim of causing severe wreckage. For three consecutive days, our financial capital was in the grip of terror. The havoc claimed 166 lives including that of foreigners. The main area that witnessed this terror for around 64 hours was the Taj Mahal Hotel, Trident-Oberoi and Nariman House.
The picture Taj Mahal Hotel encapsulated with heavy smoke is etched in the minds of every Mumbaikar. Two of the terrorists, Abdul Rehman Bada and Abu Ali had planted RDX bombs nearby. They were armed with AK-47s, ammunition and grenades and fired at everyone who came in their way. The other terrorists entered through another door and started shooting at the guests which included many foreigners. After these incidents, the Mumbai Police surrounded the Taj by midnight. The central dome of the hotel was bombed. The first round of evacuation happened safely. While the second round was going on, the terrorists spotted them when they were making an exit and shot all of them down.
The next day 200 commandos reached Mumbai and took charge of the rescue operations. The government had ordered to storm the building. Gun sounds were continuously heard from the building as if a battle was taking place. Ten grenade explosions and many rounds of firing took place within the premises.
The Oberoi-Trident was a place where a large number of tourists were staying who were the prime target of the tourists. As per the reports, by the time the siege ended, 143 hostages had been evacuated and 24 bodies recovered.
The disastrous attacks continued at Nariman Point at Chabad House (a Jewish Community Center) which had international reverberations in over 70 countries.
