S. Jaishankar hopes “Unanimous Support” across different parties amid the Bangladesh crisis, where 135 killed and hundreds injured

On Tuesday, the Union government convened an all-party meeting to address the rising political concern in Bangladesh. The meeting was briefed by Union external minister S.jaishankar and was attended by various leaders from union as well as opposition. Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP President JP Nadda, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rejiju, leaders of opposition from both the houses (Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha) Rahul Gandhi and Malikharjun Kharge were the top attendees to discuss the serious concern rising from Bangladesh in the meeting that was scheduled at 10 am.

What happened on Monday?

On Monday, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned from her post amid a deadly protest and fled from her country with her sister and landed at the Ghaziabad Hindon base near New Delhi. She is expected to continue her journey to London according to some media reports.

Meeting outcomes 

Union external affairs minister  S. Jaishankar posted on X to share the meeting’s outcomes, wherein he highlighted the unanimous support from all parties. He briefed the All-Party meeting in Parliament on the latest developments in Bangladesh and expressed appreciation for the broad support and understanding received.

Government response to the crisis 

According to ANI sources,  during the meeting, Jaishankar told the attendees that the center was in constant touch with the Bangladesh army. He further said, the situation is prevailing and appropriate actions will be taken by the government at the right time.  

 Rahul Gandhi questions strategy and Foreign involvement in the crisis 

The leader of the opposition Rahul Gandhi, inquired about the short-term and long-term strategies for handling the diplomatic shift in the dramatic events, sources reported. Jaishankar responded the situation is still evolving and the center is closely analyzing it to take the next steps. The opposition leader further questioned whether the involvement of foreign “hands”, specifically Pakistan could lead to the deadly protests to which the center replied that this angle is under investigation. A source noted that the center mentioned a Pakistani diplomat who had been frequently changing his social media display to reflect the situation in Bangladesh amid violent protests and the centre is probing whether this could indicate something more significant.

Status of Indian Nationals in Bangladesh

At the meeting, it was disclosed that about 2,000 Indian nationals remain in Bangladesh, while around 8,000 have already returned, as per ANI sources.  Further Jaishankar reassured that the Indian government is constantly maintaining regular communication with the Indian nationals, and the High Commission in Bangladesh is still operational. According to sources, the leaders were also informed about the safety of the minorities and the center’s persistent efforts to protect them as a priority.

Deaths and looting in  Bangladesh unrest

According to Dhaka Tribune, at least 135 people were killed in Bangladesh on Monday amid widespread unrest involving police shootings, mobile violence, and arson. The country reported the clashes between the demonstrators and Awami league members which resulted in the deaths of at least 96 people due to police firings, Follwing violent conflicts between police and miscreants, at least 18 people have been killed outskirts of Dhaka.

 After Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled the country, many people entered, Ganabhabhan, Hasina‘s residence, Local media in Bangladesh reported that the individuals were seen looting various items from public buildings. Protestors also vandalized Former president Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s statue. Additionally, a crowd was observed to enter inside the parliament building, taking items within.
