Saif Ali Khan: Balancing Royal Heritage with a Modern Life

Saif Ali Khan, a prominent figure in the Indian film industry, is often spotted traveling between his Mumbai home and his ancestral residence, Pataudi Palace in Haryana. As the son of the late cricketer Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, famously known as Tiger Pataudi, and veteran actor Sharmila Tagore, Saif embraces his royal lineage while carving his niche in Bollywood. In a 2013 interview with Rediff, Saif discussed how his ‘angrez’ (Westernised) image impacted his early career and his connection to his Eastern roots.

The perception of him being ‘angrez’ was a barrier

Saif acknowledged that his Western upbringing initially posed a challenge in his acting career, stating, “Yes. Early on in my career the ‘angrez’ image of mine was a hindrance.” He explained that his Western influence came from his upbringing, but he now feels more connected to his Eastern heritage. He shared, “I am scared but at the same time tempted to say that I was brought up as an Eastern prince. It may sound arrogant, but I don’t mean it in an arrogant way. I am just an Indian who has been educated abroad. I am rooted in India.” He also mentioned finding peace in praying and using a silk janamaz (prayer mat).

When questioned about his frequent visits to the West, especially London, Saif clarified his stance. He expressed a deep love for Mumbai, saying, “I love India and I love to live in Mumbai. It’s got a lot of character and is a very charming city, and I don’t think I can live anywhere else.” While he appreciates the organization and anonymity of life abroad, he emphasized, “I am happy to say that I am not a confused desi.”
