During the Red Sea Fashion Week at the St.Regis Red Sea Resort, Saudi Arabia recently had a significant cultural shift with its first-ever swimsuit fashion show. This was a huge leap in a country that is associated with strict dressing styles and thus this event indicates towards social changes as well as acceptance of diversity on different cultures.

Saudi Arabia : Breaking Conservative Norms

On the second day of the inaugural Red Sea Fashion Week, models paraded down the runway in various swimwear designs during the swimsuit fashion show. Moroccan designer Yasmina Qanzal and other designer labels like Sara Altwaim and Eau Swimwear presented their collections during this groundbreaking event. The show included one-piece swimsuits in shades of red, pink, green, and blue, with many models displaying exposed shoulders, partially visible midriffs, and plunging necklines.

Fashion and Accessories

In addition to the stylish swimsuits, some models wore beautiful accessories like strappy high heels, straw bags, sunglasses, headscarves, and sarongs; all these are just right for a beach vacation. The event took place by the pool which added to its appeal hence creating such a glamorous atmosphere that revealed designers’ creative skills and emerging fashion trends in the country.

Designers’ Perspectives

Yasmina Qanzal expressed her pride in being part of this historic moment thus emphasizing the elegance of the swimsuits and what they stand for representing the Arab world. “Certainly we have a very conservative country but we wanted to show elegant swimsuits which represent the Arab world,” she told AFP. She recognized what it meant by saying “When we got here it was clear that a swimsuit fashion show in Saudi Arabia is something really big as this first ever happened”.

Vision 2030 : A Path to Reform

The swimsuit fashion show is part of Saudi Arabia’s broader Vision 2030 initiative, spearheaded by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Since becoming the heir apparent in 2017, the Crown Prince has introduced a series of social and economic reforms aimed at softening the country’s austere image, historically influenced by a strict form of Islam known as Wahhabism.

The religious police have been removed, cinemas have been brought back, as well as mixed-gender music festivals organized. The Red Sea Fashion Week and the swimsuit show are seen as further steps in this ongoing transformation.

Reactions and Impact

Various fashion influencers and industry experts were drawn to this event. Shouq Mohammed, a Syrian fashion influencer noted that given Saudi Arabia’s attempts to open up its fashion and tourism sectors more, such a show was not surprising. French influencer Raphael Simacourbe said that even though it might seem tame by Western standards, this event is a great achievement within Saudi cultural context.

Economic Contributions

According to a report by the Saudi Fashion Commission, the fashion industry contributed 12.5 billion SAR (approximately $3.33 billion) to the national GDP in 2022, accounting for 1.4% of the total. The industry also employed 230,000 people, underscoring its importance to the country’s economy and the potential for growth under the Vision 2030 program.

A Step Towards Cultural Liberalization

The initial Red Sea Fashion Week and the historical swimsuit fashion show indicate Saudi Arabia’s gradual acceptance of cultural and social liberalization. These events are part of a wider plan for the economy diversification, attraction of international investments and bettering its global image. It is through hosting these groundbreaking events that Saudi Arabia is telling everyone how modern it is.
