The Academy Awards have never failed to witness some of the most iconic looks for almost a century now. A haven for celebrities to bring out their A-game in fashion, the Oscars is as much for fashion as it is for acting.
While all the celebrities brought their best for the biggest night of films, we couldn’t help but notice that the main characters of the night were sequins! Will this become the new trend of ‘24? Does this mean that we are far away from being done with the 90’s disco flapper-girl era? Take a glamorous walk with us as we decode some of the best sequin-dressed celebs…Hollywood style.
Sequins have always served as a bold fashion statement for Hollywood since the beginning of time, be it in the Oscars or elsewhere. Remember Michael Jackson in 1983 when he performed “Billie Jean” and premiered the moonwalk (his black sequin jacket with his iconic rhinestone glove), or Marylin Monroe’s statement “Happy Birthday” dress that she had to be sown into? From the silver screen siren of the Golden Age of Hollywood, Ava Siren to Diana Ross in a blazing red gown, to Becky G in more recent times, sequins have always delivered its promise of iconic looks and therefore this year too have rightfully become Hollywood’s favourite fashion choice.
Here’s a look at the 10 best dressed sequin looks of the evening:
- Margot Robbie
A cessation from the Barbie looks that Margot Robbie gave during her promotions, the actor opted for a black sequinned Versace gown that fitted her like a glove. With Freid Leighton jewellery and simple hair, Robbie took over the red carpet and our hearts.
- Zendaya
Zendaya never fails to deliver and we are here for it! This time exuding a fusion of old and contemporary Hollywood glamour, the Dune actress was seen in an Armani Prive gown with black sequins and rose gold detailing. Her side swept curls with Bulgari jewellery was nothing less than an ode to Hollywood’s fashion over the years.
- America Ferrera
Contrary to Margot Robbie, it seems as if America Ferrera is yet to be done with Barbie as she channelled an amalgamation of the doll with retro disco in a custom Atelier Versace with Stuart Weirzman shoes and Pomellato jewellery. This barbie definitely dropped best-dressed for the Oscars!
- Anna Taylor Joy
A tribute to Christian Dior’s legendary Junon dress from their 1949-50 fall/winter collection, Anna Taylor Joy was seen in a bedazzled Christian Dior Haute Couture piece that featured a dramatic skirt adorned with layered petal-shaped flaps. The Queen’s Gambit actor definitely caught our eye with her dreamlike strapless ball gown.
- Greta Gerwig
The ‘Barbie’ ladies all channelled disco with their sequin dresses at the Los Angeles’s Dolby Theatre with the creator herself, Greta Gerwig, too deciding to keep it shimmery. Exuding elegant charm in a Gucci ensemble with Boucheron jewellery, Gerwig arrived at the 2024 Academy Awards as her very own golden statue.
- Lupita Nyong’o
What we are sure is an ode to her iconic powder blue look and her 2014 win at the Oscars, Lupita Nyong’o is what one must aspire to be, with the actor celebrating none other than herself for the evening. As rightly stated by her stylist, the Giorgio Armani look with De Beers jewellery was “Classic iconic Hollywood glamour. And I think we delivered.”
- Becky G
This is not the first time that the actor has brought old-Hollywood glamour with sequins on the Academy Award red carpets. The singer had previously done the same in a bedazzled rose gold gown for the 2022 Oscar event; except this time she decided to put a fun modern twist to it. With a sequined corset bodice, satin opera gloves and classic stilettos, ‘vision’ would be an understatement for her.
- Emily Blunt
A Schiaparelli dress, Tiffany jewellery and Emily Blunt and you know nothing can go wrong. With floating straps and neckline, the fashion house hit it out of the park with their creativity. Blunt looked ethereal as she dripped in nude sequins with Alexander Birman shoes and a Judith Leiber Clutch.
- Michelle Yeoh
Custom Balenciaga? Michelle Yeoh? We love the look already. If there were to be a visual artwork of the word ‘celestia’, Michelle Yeoh would be the one for it. The actor adorned a one-shoulder metallic silver sequined gown, with black opera gloves and a cherry on the cake- Cindy Chao earrings to top it all off.
- Da Vine Joy Randolph
The Winner for the best Supporting Actress, Randolph also won our hearts in an alluring baby blue custom Louis Vuitton dress that the world needs to talk about more!
