Seven People Shot in Mass Shooting at New York’s Rochester

Seven people were shot, out of which one person was killed and six other people were injured, including, one in a serious life-threatening condition following a mass shooting at New York’s Rochester Maplewood Park.

The gunfire took place at 6:20 PM, July 28, according to Rochester Police. They reached Maplewood Park around 6:20 PM, responding to the report of shots fired with a large gathering. The authorities found several people suffering from gunshot wounds and a large group of people fleeing from the scene.

According to reports, a heavy burst of gunfire disrupted a large gathering in the park and caused the crowd to scatter with panic. The information about victims and shootings is still not clarified yet. 

Victims

Police informed that a 20-year-old died and another is in a serious life-threatening condition. The other five people have been hospitalized with relatively minor injuries, according to Capt. Greg Bello. 

He further added that the identity of the victim, who was shot fatally, has not been released yet pending the notification of the family. 

Authorities Response

Multiple police agencies responded to the incident in the park, including. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, the New York State Police, the Irondequoit Police, and the Rochester Police. Rochester Police confirmed that a party was taking place in the area during the time of the shooting. But they’re still not clear about the exact circumstances leading to the violence. 

“At this point, we don’t know how many people were shooting”, Captain Greg Bellow said. “We’re trying to work our way through as many witnesses as we can.” The police said that no suspects were in custody. The investigation into what led to the shooting is still ongoing. 

Rochester Police Chief David Smith said they were looking for more than one suspect. “We are looking for more than one person. I can’t clarify or quantify if they were part of this gathering or if they came from outside.”

The police have appealed to the public for assistance in resolving the tragic event. The police have further asked anyone with the video of the shooting to send it to Major Crimes or contact Crime Stoppers.
