A significant political controversy has occurred, triggered by a recent incident of sexual assault in a school in Badlapur, Thane district, Maharashtra. The opposition has criticised the state government over its absence of commitment to women‘s safety. The occurrence, in which two four-year-old students were allegedly assaulted sexually by a cleaning staff member in a school bathroom, sparked indignation around the state and exposed serious concerns concerning the safeguarding of children in educational institutions.
Opposition’s Criticism: A Call for Accountability
MP Supriya Sule of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Uddhav Thackeray, the head of the Shiv Sena (UBT), formed opposition to the Maharashtra government’s handling of the current situation. Sule in particular expressed displeasure with the First Information Report (FIR) filing delay, claiming that the process took longer than eighteen hours after the incident was reported. She has questioned the efficiency of the state’s law enforcement in protecting its residents, particularly young girls, and demands a high-level probe into the state of affairs.

Sule reflected the discontent of the people as she stated, “The government should resign if it is unable to provide security and justice to the daughters of the state.” Her comments emphasise the supposed failure of the government machinery to respond promptly whenever circumstances affect women’s and children’s safety.
Uddhav Thackeray, the head of the Shiv Sena (UBT), joined the chorus to demand that the case be brought up in a fast-track court. The government program called Mukhyamantri Ladki Bahin, which provides monetary support to women, was also criticised by Thackeray’s criticism. He questioned the goal of such initiatives, considering the government’s failure to guarantee women’s and children’s essential safety. Thackeray announced, “I think no one should be spared, and speedy action should be taken,” alluding to the alleged ties between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) currently in office and the school management.
Government’s Response: Promises of Strict and Speedy Action
As the public pressure boosted Chief Minister Eknath Shinde committed an immediate and impartial inquiry. Shinde emphasised that the accused has been taken into custody and that harsh measures, as stipulated by the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, will be implemented. In an effort to ensure that justice will be done without unnecessary delay, the Chief Minister also promised that the case will be dealt with in a fast-track court.
Additionally, the home department’s deputy chief minister, Devendra Fadnavis, announced the creation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to look into the event. Arti Singh, an IPS officer, will be heading the SIT. By emphasising that “nobody will be spared,” Fadnavis underlined the government’s solid opposition to such terrible acts.
Institutional Accountability: A Need for Reform
Deepak Kesarkar, Minister of School Education, spoke as well regarding the issue and emphasised why the police weren’t reacting appropriately to the parents’ complaint. The principal and numerous teachers of the school administration were suspended, and the negligent police officer has been transferred. In accordance with Kesarkar’s statement, there had been a serious violation of the school’s security and safety protocols as the CCTV cameras were not functioning.

Considering this, Kesarkar stated that the Sakhi Savitri Committee’s presence at the school has been verified by the government. The three-tiered safety framework, the Sakhi Savitri Committee, includes teachers, parents, and health workers, amongst other stakeholders, to protect children. For the purpose of enhancing protections for students, Kesarkar also stated that Vishakha committees—which have the goal of dealing with sexual harassment in the workplace—will be established in schools.
The Larger Implications: A Call for Systemic Change
The sex abuse case at the Badlapur school is not an isolated prevalence; rather, it is a reflection of broader systemic issues with the state’s approach to safeguarding women and children. While admirable, the government’s dedication to funding initiatives like the Mukhyamantri Ladki Bahin plan appears inadequate considering the significant threats to security. The failure of the school’s security precautions, including the not-operational CCTV cameras, and the delay in filing the FIR indicate the need for an increased and comprehensive approach to child protection.
The urgent requirement for a safer environment for women and children in Maharashtra is made clear by the opposition’s demand for accountability and the government’s promise of severe action. The people of Maharashtra and the nation in general will be deeply watching the effectiveness of the government’s response as the case progresses.
The accident is an unsettling reminder that, while empowerment initiatives and financial assistance are important, they can’t take the place of the vital task of ensuring justice and safety. The government is now required to take immediate action to regain the confidence of the public and make sure that such situations are avoided in the future by enforcing the law completely, strengthening institutional safety, and accelerating the legal process.
