The opposition has criticised the state government over its absence of commitment to women‘s safety. The occurrence, in which two four-year-old students were allegedly assaulted sexually by a cleaning staff member in a school bathroom, sparked indignation around the state and exposed serious concerns concerning the safeguarding of children in educational institutions.

MP Supriya Sule of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Uddhav Thackeray, the head of the Shiv Sena (UBT), formed opposition to the Maharashtra government’s handling of the current situation. He questioned the goal of such initiatives, considering the government’s failure to guarantee women’s and children’s essential safety. Thackeray announced, “I think no one should be spared, and speedy action should be taken,” alluding to the alleged ties between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) currently in office and the school management.
Government’s Response: Promises of Strict and Speedy Action
As the public pressure boosted Chief Minister Eknath Shinde committed an immediate and impartial inquiry. Shinde emphasised that the accused has been taken into custody and that harsh measures, as stipulated by the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, will be implemented. In an effort to ensure that justice will be done without unnecessary delay, the Chief Minister also promised that the case will be dealt with in a fast-track court.
Additionally, the home department’s deputy chief minister, Devendra Fadnavis, announced the creation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to look into the event.
