In a social media video, Shikhar Dhawan announced his retirement from both domestic and international cricket.
A video statement posted on social media on Saturday, Indian cricket star Shikhar Dhawan announced his retirement from both domestic and international cricket. The left-handed opener has a fruitful career lasting more than ten years. He made his debut against Australia in Visakhapatnam in 2010. During his career, Dhawan amassed over 10,000 runs in all forms while playing for India in 34 Tests, 167 ODIs, and 68 T20Is. His astounding accomplishments include 24 centuries, of which 17 came in ODIs and 7 in Tests, demonstrating his strength as a top-order batsman.
“I always knew I wanted to play for India, and I got there because of so many people: my family, my childhood coach Tarak Sinha and Madan Sharma, who helped me learn the game; my entire team, with whom I played for years; everyone’s love and support; and, as they say, turning over new pages is necessary to move on in the story, so that’s what I’m doing, too: I’m announcing my retirement from domestic and international cricket,” the southpaw said in the video.
“And now that my cricket career is coming to an end, I can rest easy knowing that I contributed significantly to my nation. I really appreciate all of my fans’ love and support, as well as the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) and DDCA (Delhi & District Cricket Association) for providing me with this chance. I just say this to myself that don’t be sad that you won’t play for your country again but always be happy that you played for your country. And it’s the biggest triumph for me that I played,” he added.
