Shimla’s Experiencing Heavy Rainfall:
Shimla, the picturesque hill station in Himachal Pradesh, is grappling with another bout of heavy
rainfall as the monsoon season intensifies. This comes just months after the city experienced a
record-breaking downpour in June, surpassing the previous highest monthly rainfall recorded in 1988.
The unprecedented rainfall caused widespread disruption, with landslides blocking roads,
flooding several areas, and forcing the closure of schools and offices. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow rain warning for the next two days, indicating the likelihood of continued rainfall in the region.
Both locals and tourists are finding it challenging to navigate their daily lives amidst the incessant downpour. The districts of Solan, Shimla, and Sirmaur have been particularly hard hit, with thick fog blanketing the surroundings.

Local residents are expressing concerns about the impact of the heavy rainfall on their daily
routines. Kundan Singh, a local resident, highlighted the difficulties faced by people due to the
severe weather conditions.
“It has been raining nonstop,” he said. “We are having issues since the intense rain has interfered with daily routine. Because of the weather, nobody is working here on Mall Road. In addition, fewer tourists are coming, and many are finding it harder to commute. We hope the rain soon stops as we still have a few more days left.”
Local vendors and employees are also feeling the brunt of the heavy rainfall. Abdul, another local
resident, mentioned the challenges faced by students in reaching their schools due to the
incessant rain.

“Students had difficulties getting to schools because it has been raining since the
morning,” he said. “There is no employment for us since local residents are having difficulties and visitors are not coming due of the rain. Three more days of rain are predicted by the weather
service.”
Authorities are driven for People’s Safety :
Authorities have urged locals and visitors to Shimla and other parts of Himachal Pradesh to take
necessary safety precautions and stay updated on weather advisories. The State Disaster
Management Authority’s data reveals that 469 electrical supply systems have been impacted
statewide, and 71 roads, including one national highway, are closed.
The Shimla Meteorological Center has forecast mild to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, and
lightning across Himachal Pradesh. These conditions could result in poor visibility, traffic
disruptions, and flooding in low-lying areas.
The IMD issued a forecast for Shimla city, stating, “Low visibility conditions with light to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning is most likely to persist.” This is expected to cause reduced visibility, waterlogging in low-lying areas, slippery roads, traffic interruptions, and moderate structural damage.
Other districts in Himachal Pradesh, including Sirmaur, Kangra, Chamba, Hamirpur, Mandi,
Bilaspur, and Solan, are also expected to receive mild to moderate rainfall, with occasional heavy
downpours. Kullu, Una, and Shimla are predicted to experience similar weather conditions.
In the last 24 hours, Shimla recorded a maximum temperature of 24.2 degrees Celsius, a
minimum temperature of 16.2 degrees Celsius, and 4 mm of rainfall.
The recent rainfall has underscored Shimla’s vulnerability to extreme weather events. The city’s
hilly terrain and rapid urbanization have increased its susceptibility to landslides and flooding.
Experts warn that climate change is exacerbating these risks, as rising temperatures lead to more
intense and frequent rainfall.
The IMD advises residents to exercise caution and remain vigilant due to potential weather-
related disruptions.
