The motive behind the shooting is still unclear at the moment, police have yet to discern a probable motive for the attacker.
Two children, one of them being an 8-year-old, were among the people who were injured when the gunman started attacking a children’s water park located in Michigan on Saturday evening. According to Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard, the shooter, who had been hiding in a nearby home, was found dead. Police reported that “nine, maybe 10” victims were injured in the shooting at Brooklands Plaza Splash Pad in Rochester Hills and were taken to the hospital.
“We are currently in the process of responding to an active shooter incident happening at the splash pad located on Auburn in Rochester Hills. It still remains an active crime scene. The suspect is believed to be contained nearby, but we urge everyone to avoid the area for now. There are multiple injured victims.” the police department posted on X (formerly Twitter).
The Shooting
According to the Oakland County Sheriff, the suspect arrived at the splash pad around 5 pm. on Saturday and began shooting after exiting his vehicle. The suspect reloaded his gun multiple times, firing up to 28 rounds.
The motive for the shooting remains unclear, but police have reason to believe the attack was random.
Rochester Hills Mayor Bryan K. Barnett stated that the police have secured the area of the attack. “The Rochester Hills Fire Department has arrived at the scene, and has successfully secured the area. We appreciate everyone’s patience as we handle this situation.” he said.
Police initially reported that five people were shot, but it remains unclear if there were any fatalities. Rochester Hills, located about 30 miles (50 km) north of Detroit, is near Oxford Township. Oxford Township, also in Oakland County, was the site of a mass school shooting in 2021, where 15-year-old student Ethan Crumbley killed four students and injured six others along with a teacher at Oxford High School.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer expressed her sorrow on X, saying how heartbroken she was to learn about the shooting in Rochester Hills.
