The 2024 Cannes film festival commenced from May 14 to May 25. A number of celebrities seized this opportunity at the Cannes Film Festival in 2024 to show their solidarity towards Palestine, attracting a lot of media interest and igniting discussions about the issue. Bella Hadid

On May 23, the US Dutch Palestinian supermodel celebrity Bella Hadid, who is the daughter of real estate tycoon Mohamed Hadid and US Dutch model Yolanda Hadid, made a striking fashion statement on the Cannes Film Festival sidelines by donning a red-and-white keffiyeh-inspired garment. US designers Hushi Mortezaie and Michael Sears designed the outfit in 2001. Hadid captioned her Instagram post with the message “Free Palestine forever” and a Palestinian flag emoji to explain the significance of her look. Hadid has previously demonstrated her support for Palestine in public at a number of venues, taking part in protests and using social media to spread awareness.

Cate Blanchett:

The Oscar-winning actress subtly showed her support for Palestine by wearing it in a subtle fashion. On the Cannes red carpet, Blanchett wore a black dress by Haider Ackermann with a green lining. The dress’s colors were seen to be reminiscent of the Palestinian flag. As a supporter of Artists4Ceasefire, Blanchett has previously campaigned for negotiation and humanitarian help in Gaza. Blanchett brought attention to the humanitarian tragedy in Palestine by dressing with subdued yet powerful motifs that spoke to an international demographic. ​

Kani Kusruti

Indian actress Kani Kusruti raised awareness for the Palestinian cause by wearing a watermelon purse as a distinctive accessory. This clutch, which stood for the colors of the Palestinian flag, represented support for the resistance movement in Palestine. The clutch was designed by Kochi-based designer Diya John. The white dress she wore on the red carpet was also designed by Diya John. On social media, Kusruti’s gesture received a lot of attention and appreciation, especially from the Malayalam film fraternity. She took a stand in favor of Palestinian rights, among other worldwide voices, by calling for a ceasefire and peace in Gaza.

Asmae El Moudir

El Moudir is a renowned director recognized for her documentary “The Mother of All Lies,” which debuted at Cannes in 2023 and took home numerous honors, such as the Golden Eye for Best Documentary and the Un Certain Regard Directing Prize. The Moroccan director chose a distinctive method to support Palestine by wearing the Palestinian national flag on her gloves, designed by Halina I. Satnslaw. This showed her commitment to social causes in her public appearances and speeches, in addition to her films. She wore a black dress designed by the Dorota Goldpoint fashion brand.

French actress Leila Bekhti also chose to support Palestine by wearing a heart-shaped watermelon pin. She wore a black Dior mini-blazer dress with long sleeves.

Pascale Kann 

Actress Pascale Kann protested the Cannes Film Festival’s censorship of Palestine by donning a distinctive outfit. She was dressed in Trashy Clothing attire, a Palestinian label. The clothing has the Arabic word for Palestine featured on it.

The American Amy Argyle debuted at the Cannes Film Festival wearing a Palestinian headscarf. Later, she took to Instagram to show her support and dedication to helping.

Gilles Porte

The French director Gilles Porte was a member of the Caméra d’Or jury for the 77th Cannes Film Festival and showed support for Palestine by wearing a rosette that looked like a piece of watermelon, which symbolises the Palestinian flag.
