The importance of this move
Currently, there are certain challenges which have restricted the students coming from India for studying in foreign countries like there are visa limitations, job insecurities, and frequent change in the immigration policies in the developed countries such as UK,USA, Canada, New Zealand and Australia. However, thanks to increasingly competitive global education systems, and the trend where top universities are investing in campuses all across India, this is not entirely the case.
In fact, the UGC had already issued regulations for establishment and operation of foreign university campuses in India back in 2023. UGC Chairman Jagadesh Kumar was quick to debunk the myth by confirming that “the degrees that are awarded will bear the name of the University of Southampton India , Having the same accreditation as the host university, the programmes offered will be of the same academic and quality standards.”
Apart from Southampton, two other universities from Australia – University of Wollongong and Deakin University are also coming up with campuses in GIFT City in Gujarat. The economic situation of these campuses is that they operate under the conditions of special economic zones that provide for tax privileges and the repatriation of profits for universities.
