Independent Spirit Awards

The Independent Spirit Awards, formerly known as the Friends of Independent Awards, is a prestigious accolade that celebrates outstanding achievements in independent filmmaking and television production.

Established in 1984, it was initially named the Friends of Independent Awards but was later renamed the Independent Spirit Awards in 1986 to better reflect its focus on independent cinema. The awards ceremony typically takes place annually in the United States, drawing attention to the diverse and often innovative storytelling found in independent productions.

The awards are organized by Film Independent, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting independent filmmakers and fostering the growth of independent cinema. The winners are determined through a voting process conducted by the awards committee of Film Independent.
