Spurs snatched a dramatic victory against 9 man Liverpool FC in a thrilling contest at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London.
Dream Start for Spurs
Spurs have made a terrific start to this Season’s English Premiere League campaign. They are yet to be defeated in the season and are currently 2nd on the table behind league leaders Manchester City FC.
Out of the 7 games played by all the teams, Spurs have won 5 and drawn 2. This Win against Liverpool FC saw them climb up to joint 2nd position with their North-London arch rivals Arsenal FC.
Spurs’ Newly appointed manager Ange Postecoglou has completely turned around the situation of the club by showcasing some beautiful football to their fans. The negativity of last season has completely seemed to disappear.
New signings James Maddison, Micky Van de vaan, Pape Matar Sarr have been performing exceptionally well with their South Korean Star Hueng-Ming-Son in the mix. Spurs look a completely different team then what they were last year.
Liverpool receive 2 Red Cards against Spurs
This game was surely a dramatic one in all accords as Liverpool receive 2 Red cards in each half. Curtis Jones, the midfielder receiving the first red card at the 26th minute. Diogo Jota, the centre forward receiving the 2nd red card at the 69th minute increased the pressure on the remaining players.
This would have been a completely different game if Liverpool FC would have had all their 11 players playing on the pitch for them. Poor officiating by the VAR saw their goal scored by Luis Diaz getting cancelled out due to offside.
Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool FC manager was fuming in the Post-Match press conference regarding the poor decisions made by the referee’s and the VAR in the EPL. The 2nd red card killed the game for Liverpool as they had to defend deep in their own half without having any threat to attack.
Spurs Win in Stoppage Time
Spurs have come back from deficits to defeat Brentford and Burnley on the road, defeated Sheffield United at home earlier this month with two goals in stoppage time, and then twice overcame deficits at Arsenal to draw the North London derby at the Emirates.
In contrast, against Liverpool, Klopp’s team equalized with Cody Gakpo while down to 10 men, erasing Heung-min Son’s initial goal after Luis Diaz had previously scored with a strike that VAR had incorrectly adjudged to be offside.
Then, when Liverpool was reduced to nine players for the final 20 minutes after Diogo Jota was sent off for receiving two quick yellow cards, Klopp’s team’s organisation and effort level threatened to deny Spurs the victory.
After a nail-biting performance by his players the gaffer added some of his thoughts post-match, “You want to put the game to bed earlier than we did,” Postecoglou said. “But when you score that late, it can help build the spirit within the group.”
“Invariably, we are going to have some major challenges where things don’t run smooth, but you need to have that spirit within the group,” he said.
“Even with the two extra men, the way Liverpool play, they still make it difficult for you. We didn’t handle it too well when they initially went down to 10 men. We started rushing things thinking we had the man advantage, and that we can dominate things. They prey on you making mistakes and thinking you have the upper hand.
Even if it was cruel on a Liverpool club that had made things so difficult for the home team, Spurs were ultimately rewarded in the sixth minute of stoppage time when Pedro Porro’s cross was turned into his own net by the Liverpool defender Joel Matip.
