Season one of Squid Game focused on Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), a divorced father and indebted gambler who is invited to compete in children’s games for a large cash reward. At a covert site, he joins 455 other desperate players who are all being watched closely by guards wearing pink jumpsuits and masks. The games are being run by the enigmatic Front Man. The gamers quickly discover that losing a game results in death. To survive, Gi-hun teams up with people, including defector Kang Sae-byeok (Jung Ho-yeon) and his childhood buddy Cho Sang-woo (Park Hae-soo).

According to the official synopsis of Season 2; “Three years after winning the Squid Game, Player 456 is still determined to locate the individuals behind the game and put an end to their violent sport. Gi-hun begins his hunt in the most obvious location, using his riches to finance it: look for the man playing dakji in the tube, dressed sharply. However, when his efforts do pay off, he discovers that the route to overthrowing the organisation is more treacherous than he had anticipated: in order to win, he must re-enter the game.

The first season of Squid Game is still the most viewed of any Netflix series. It received fourteen Emmy nominations and six wins, including best actor in a drama series for Lee, best guest actress in a drama for Lee You-mi, and best director for a drama series for Hwang.
