SQUID GAME: THE CHALLENGE- FILMING

In early 2023, Squid Game: The Challenge was filmed in the United Kingdom. Variety revealed on January 25 that a number of competitors needed medics on the show’s set because of the frigid weather. One of the competitors allegedly compared the circumstances on the show to a “war zone” in an interview with The Sun. Additionally, the outlet reported that during filming, at least one contestant had to be carried off on a stretcher.

Netflix, however, refuted reports that any serious injuries occurred on the reality show’s set. “Any claims of serious injury are untrue, even though it was very cold on set and participants were prepared for that,” a statement from Netflix read that they are deeply invested in all the necessary safety procedures because they genuinely care about the health and safety of their cast and crew.

Netflix first revealed Squid Game: The Challenge in June 2022, which was nine months after the release of the scripted series. Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk of Squid Game, who won Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series, had to defend the reality spinoff against backlash from fans while doing backstage interviews at the 2022 Emmy Awards.

“Although our show does have a strong message, and I am aware that some people are worried about turning that message into a reality show with cash prizes, I believe that taking things too seriously is not the best course of action for the entertainment industry. It’s not really a very good precedent, according to Hwang. Consequently, I believe that replications of these initiatives will give the sector new significance. Additionally, I think that this will be a fantastic new turn for the industry as a whole.
