On the fourth day of the Conservative Party conference in Manchester, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak unveiled a series of significant announcements, making it a pivotal moment in his political career.
One of the most headline-grabbing moves was the cancellation of the northern leg of the HS2 high-speed rail project. Sunak attributed this decision to soaring costs, which had doubled since the project’s inception. This bold move freed up a staggering £36 billion ($43.7 billion), earmarked for new transportation initiatives in the North and Midlands.
Another key announcement focused on education. Sunak introduced plans for a British standard qualification, mandatory for all individuals aged 16-19. This qualification emphasizes English and mathematics and aims to attract and train new teachers proficient in these subjects.
Sunak didn’t stop there; he proposed a gradual increase in the smoking age, adding one year each year. This move will prevent children who turn 14 this year from purchasing cigarettes, signaling a commitment to public health.
The healthcare sector also featured prominently in Sunak’s speech. He unveiled an ambitious reform program aimed at doubling the number of doctors and nurses through domestic training efforts rather than relying on foreign hires and agencies. This initiative seeks to bolster the National Health Service (NHS) with homegrown talent.
However, not everyone was convinced by Sunak’s address. Chris Wilkins, a strategic adviser for former Prime Minister Theresa May, criticized the speech for lacking radical and bold solutions. He argued that after 13 years of Conservative rule, the public expects more significant changes and solutions to pressing issues.
Moreover, a YouGov poll revealed that support for the HS2 rail line hadn’t substantially grown since its announcement in 2019. Only 8% strongly supported the project in 2023, up from 7% in 2019. Similarly, the percentage of people tending to support the plan dropped from 22% in 2019 to 18% in 2023, indicating lingering doubts about the project’s viability.
In a video following his speech, Sunak emphasized the decision to scrap the northern leg of the HS2 rail line, reaffirming the importance of fiscal responsibility.
Chancellor of the Exchequer Jeremy Hunt praised Sunak’s speech, commending its decisiveness and forward-looking policies. He expressed pride in the Prime Minister’s courageous approach.
Sunak concluded his address with a promise of boldness and radicalism, vowing to confront resistance and deliver long-term solutions for the nation’s betterment. He emphasized the need for change, positioning his government as the catalyst for a brighter future.
Additionally, Sunak unveiled plans to replace A-levels with a new, advanced British standard qualification that combines A-levels and T-levels. This shift aims to bridge the gap between academic and technical education, ensuring that all students receive this advanced qualification.
Addressing concerns about racism in the UK, Sunak shared his personal story as evidence of the country’s inclusivity and progress. He highlighted that the people of North Yorkshire judged him not by his color but by his character, asserting that the UK is not a racist nation.
Lastly, Sunak reiterated his commitment to curbing cross-Channel migration via small boats, including measures like deportations to Rwanda. Despite legal challenges, he pledged to do whatever was necessary to halt these arrivals.
