As per the recent reports in media, (KKR) Kolkata Knight Riders has approached Surya Kumar Yadav, and has given an offer of captaincy to him, and want back their player through trade. Since 2018, Surya Kumar Yadav has been playing for Mumbai Indians . It would be no surprise that the player would like to return to the franchise with a more bulk offer.
Before the 2025 IPL season begins, BCCI has met all the team owners to discuss the course of the season ahead, and more or less, the majority of the owners were against the IPL 2025 auction, even though it is going to happen nevertheless. And most of the franchise could retain about six to seven players, as the Right to Match card is about to make its reappearance in the mega auction.
Surya Kumar Yadav and the turmoil situation in Mumbai Indians
Surya Kumar Yadav began his era in Mumbai Indians when he was bought for ₹32 million in the 2018 auction. Previously he played for Kolkata Knight Riders, winning the title for the first season in his team in 2014. He was a star player for MI, as he scored 1400 runs across three seasons including winning titles in both 2019 and 2020.
However, he was retained back in 2022, even though he missed that half of the season due to injury. His best IPL season till date had been in 2023, when he was appointed as a vice captain for MI, and scored his maiden century against Gujarat Titans. However he missed half of the matches in 2024, due to injury despite scoring his second century against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
The franchise naming all rounder Hardik Pandya as the captain of MI, from this season onwards has not settled well with the senior players of the team like Jasprit Bumrah and Surya Kumar Yadav. Both the players including former MI captain Rohit Sharma have been looking for transfer options with other teams. The collateral damage has been deepened and has resulted in a shakedown of the squad in MI.
Will Surya Kumar Yadav leave MI and join KKR?
There has been no lies that, due to the disputed scenario in Mumbai Indians, Surya Kumar would decide to leave the franchise. His excellency in captaincy was demonstrated in the three match series T20I against Sri Lanka, where they won by 3-0, and SKY won the man of the match. He would now lead Team India in the next T20I against Bangladesh.
However, looking at the facts, it would be difficult for KKR to part ways with their title winning captain Shreyas Iyer, this soon. Not to mention that there isn’t any trading window before IPL auction 2026, and they have to use Iyer as a trading card. SKY had been associated with Kolkata Knight Riders from 2014 to 2017 before roped in by the cash rich team and had been their star batter, ever since.
There is also a possibility that Mumbai Indians would replace Hardik Pandya as the captain and might give a better offer to Yadav and retain him. The decision would rest on Yadav, whether he would return to his former franchise or stay with the current team, with whoever bids better.
