International sources reported that two teenagers, ages 17 and 19, were among the suspects arrested on Tuesday. The 19-year-old was living in Ternitz with his parents and had sworn allegiance to ISIS. Police found a variety of chemicals and substances in the 19-year-old’s home, along with materials related to the Islamic State group and al-Qaida in the 17-year-old’s residence, leading them to both be arrested.

Attack And Suspect Details

An 18-year-old Iraqi national was the third individual detained and taken into custody on Thursday evening. In a separate news conference on Friday, Interior Minister Gerhard Karner announced that the 19-year-old had vowed allegiance to ISIS and “comes from the social environment as the 18-year-old suspect, though the 18-year-old is not directly related to the ploy.

According to reports, the 19-year-old began preparing the attack in July and planned to use either homemade explosives or blades. Swift was due to perform in the Ernst Happel Stadium in Vienna on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings as part of her Eras Tour. A few days before to the arrests, the 17-year-old was employed by a company providing services for the event location, and he was taken into custody by special forces close to the stadium.

During a press conference, Franz Ruf, the director of Vienna State Police, and Gerhard Purstl, the chief of police, said that they had both been radicalized online and that they appeared to have clear plans on how the assault would be carried out. Purstl stated that although the “abstract danger” had been eliminated, the “minimized” physical danger was still present, which is why the shows were cancelled. Within the next ten days, refunds will be given to ticket holders.
