The 74-year-old politician and veteran Bollywood actor Mithun Chakraborty will be presented with the coveted Dadasaheb Phalke Award. On October 8, 2024, at the 70th National Film Awards ceremony, he will receive an accolade.

The news on X was delivered by Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. “Generations are inspired by Mithun Da’s remarkable cinematic journey,” the writer stated. It is with great honour that we announce the awarding of the renowned actor Sh. Mithun Chakraborty Ji for his legendary contribution to Indian cinema by the Dadasaheb Phalke Selection Jury.”
Mithun received the renowned Padma Bhushan Award earlier this year. His cinematic career began with Mrinal Sen’s drama Mrigayaa, which won a National Award in 1976. He won his first National Film Award for Best Actor for this performance.
Historical Journey
Born in Calcutta, Mithun Chakraborty made his acting debut in the 1976 film Mrigayaa, for which he was honored with a National Film Award for Best Actor.
Two more National Film Awards have been given to Mithun for his work in the films Tahader Katha (1992) and Swami Vivekananda (1998). He played the lead in the 1982 box office hit picture Disco Dancer, which helped make him a household celebrity.
He received recognition for the 1990 film Agneepath as well. He frequently serves as a judge in reality shows. He most recently starred in Vivek Agnihotri’s film The Kashmir Files. In the movie Bad Boy, his son Namashi Chakraborty made his Bollywood debut.
The Directorate of Film Festivals presents the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the highest accolade in Indian cinema, each year at the National Film Awards event.
Known as the pioneer of Indian film, Dadasaheb Phalke was honored with this prestigious prize in 1969; Chakraborty will be the 54th laureate. Raja Harishchandra, India’s first feature film, was directed by Phalke in 1913.
This award has been given to 53 people so far, including well-known people like Prithviraj Kapoor, Vinod Khanna, Raj Kapoor, Shashi Kapoor, Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, B.R. Chopra, and Yash Chopra for their achievements. The Dadasaheb Phalke Award went to Waheeda Rehman in 2021.
