On Sunday, Justin Trudeau, Canada’s prime minister, interacted with King Abdullah II bin Al-Hussein of Jordan and gave him a update on the diplomatic between Canada and India, while emphasizing the need of following the rules of law and respecting the provisions of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Affairs
India – Canada Conflict
The surprising accusation that “the Indian government may have been responsible for the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar was made by the Canadian Prime Minister last month.
He said that India has been informed of these “credible accusations” in the past. “Canada has informed India of the reliable charges discussed on Monday. That was done a few weeks ago. We are there to cooperate with India in a positive way. We hope that they cooperate with us so that we can investigate this really severe issue, he said at a press conference.
In June, Nijjar, 45, was fatally shot in front of a gurdwara near British Columbia, Canada. One of the most wanted terrorists, he served as the leader of the outlawed Khalistan Tiger Force.
The Diplomatic Row between India & Canada
The charges made by Trudeau that India was complicit in the death of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar are what started the diplomatic dispute between Canada and India.
Although Trudeau’s office released a statement on the meeting and the topics covered therein, King Abdullah II’s office did not specifically refer to the conversation about India-Canada relations in their statement.
During the discussion, Trudeau also underlined that Canada fully supports Israel’s right to self-defense and vehemently denounced the widespread assaults against Israel by Hamas.
India dismissed Prime Minister Trudeau’s accusations as “absurd” and “motivated,” which led to his attempts to defuse the conflict between the two countries. In retaliation for Ottawa’s removal of an Indian official due to the matter, India had also removed a senior Canadian minister.
The conversation between Trudeau and UK Chancellor Rishi Sunak earlier this week also emphasized the need to defuse the diplomatic crisis between the two countries and the need of preserving the rule of law.
India has expressed its willingness to cooperate and analyze any particular or pertinent material offered by Canada on the claims made by the Canadian government, which has strained diplomatic ties between the two countries as a result of the strained relations.
Trudeau’s conversation with King of Jordan
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau “unequivocally condemned Gaza’ massive assaults against the nation of Israel, and he emphasized that Canada stands by Israel’s right to protect itself” during his discussions with the king of Jordan on Monday. Trudeau claimed in a post on X that he spoke on a call with the UAE President Mohamed Bin Zayed.
Trudeau said that Canada is in contact with its international allies to monitor the circumstances and restore stability and safety in the area, and that the government of Canada has taken note of the horrors occurring in the conflict between Israel and Hamas.
After Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau claimed in his Parliament that a “foreign agent” was responsible for the death of Khalistan separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar, ties between the two nations have reached an all-time low.
He also said that he carried intelligence information and proof that Nijjar’s killing could have been planned by the Indian government.
On June 18, unidentified gunmen assassinated Nijjar outside a Gurdwara in Surrey, Canada. He was the leader of the outlawed Khalistan Tiger Force, and in 2020, the Indian government labeled him as a terrorist under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act. Additionally, Interpol has repeatedly issued red corner notices against him, first in 2016.
