If the recent buzz of re-release of movies in Bollywood like Tumbaad and Laila Majnu have you hurrying to book tickets, you’re not alone. Cinephiles all over the country have been indulging with all the theatrical re-releases this year. Whether it’s to celebrate a film’s anniversary, stir buzz before a sequel, or just to rewatch a classic movie, producers, actors and filmmakers have been bringing back old films on the silver screen.

Nostalgia – The Driving Force Behind Rereleases

But this is not the only reason they are doing. Surely nostalgia is a driving force to attract viewers to rewatch these films, other reason is some of these movies didn’t do well when they were released but were loved and appreciated by the audience after watching it on OTT platforms. So this rerelease also gives audience a chance to see the film on big screen and have a full cinematic experience. Films Like Laila Majnu and Rockstar are great examples of this. Laila Majnu had an occupancy of 80% in Mumbai and 40% all over India, it’s a great deal for a rerelease to garner this much attention.

Though nostalgia is a driving factor behind rereleases, the producers are also pushing to release more old films due to the rapid tanking of even big star led movies in recent time. Apart from Stree 2 with the gross earnings of over 600 crores at the box office the no other big budget and star-led movies like Fighter, Maidaan, Vedaa, Bade Miyan Chote Miyan and Sarfira, did remotely well at the box office. Though films like Munjya and Kalki 2898 AD were one or two exceptions to the horrible run of movies in theatres.

This rereleases have become a way for the production and distribution companies to make a profit during their lossmaking times. his is a good way to fill up the halls and recover money as those who loved watching these movies or missed them at the time of their release seem keen for the big screen experience. This strategy has become a great method to refill the empty cinemas and salvage money as those who loved or missed seeing these movies back at the time of their release are interested in watching it on the big screen.
