Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi

Speaker of the House in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi spoke about the recent landslide relief  efforts in Wayanad and emphasized the need for relief in tourism to the region.

Speaking to local Congress leaders on Sunday, Gandhi appreciated the cooperation of communities and organizations in responding to the disaster.

“Wayanad is still recovering from the devastating effects of the landslides. Although there is still much work to be done, it is encouraging to see people from all communities and organizations coming together to work and live”.

Importance of Tourism for the Revival of Wayanad

Gandhi emphasized the important role of tourism in helping to improve Wayanad.  He  emphasized the importance of reviving the tourism sector after the rains receded.  One  important feature I would like to mention is that it will really help the people of Wayanad  city. “After the end of the rains, we need to make a strong effort to revive tourism in this area and encourage people to visit”.

Area effect vs Risk assessment

Wayanad was hit hard by a landslide in the late hours of July 30, causing death, destruction and displacement of many people. More than 350 deaths have been reported  and thousands  have  been left homeless. The worst affected areas in Wayanad are Chooralmala, Mundakkai and Vellarimala villages in Meppadi district.

Gandhi said the landslide affected a specific area of Wayanad and not the entire region.
He said the idea of danger outside the area could deter visitors. It is important to note that the landslide is in a specific area in Wayanad and not the entire region. Wayanad  continues to  be a wonderful place and is ready to welcome tourists from all over India and the world with all its beauty.

Areas of focus for relief efforts

The council leader also pointed out some areas that require relief efforts. These include poor  inter-sector coordination, lack of affordability and loss of livelihoods. As far as I know, there are four or five things we have to contend with. One is the lack of coordination  between  the relief and rehabilitation agencies, second is the lack of payment, and third is the  retirement  issue  which I raised later which has cost the lives of many people including the vehicles and farms and finally the impact of tourism.

Impact of Climate on Landslides in Wayanad

Landslides have killed many people in Wayanad, due to climate change. A study by the World Weather Attribution (WWA) found that human-caused climate change has increased  rainfall  by nearly 10 percent.
