Two women were almost buried alive in Hinuata village, Rewa, Madhya Pradesh after a truck dumped gravel on them during a protest against road construction on the land.
Incident Overview
The women, named Mamta Pandey and Asha Pandey, were partially buried in a pile of gravel while they were protesting against the construction of a road on land they leased in Hinota Jorot village under Mangawa police station, according to reports on Saturday.
A video of the incident shows the women sitting behind the truck filled with gravel just before the incident. Another viral video shows the women buried to their waists in gravel and locals trying to help them.
One woman lost consciousness, and both were taken to the Community Health Center in Gangev, reported PTI. The police reported that they are stable and have now been discharged from the health centre.
Victims’ Claims and Police Response
According to the complaint filed by the victims, they had leased the land and were protesting against road construction on it, but their concerns were ignored. The situation escalated when a truck dumped gravel on them. They claimed that they were physically assaulted, and the gravel was dumped purposefully on them in an attempt to kill them.
Superintendent of Rewa Police, Vivek Singh, told ANI news agency that the situation stemmed from a family land dispute related to the construction of a road. A case has been filed for attempted murder. Three people have been accused, with one already arrested. The hunt for the other accused is ongoing. He added that other video evidence has also been found.
Senior police officer Vivek Lal confirmed that an investigation is being conducted and that all leads are being pursued.
State Congress President Jitu Patwari criticised the government’s failure to protect women, emphasising that crimes against women are highest in Madhya Pradesh.
