An important earthquake struck off Japan’s southern seacoast on Thursday, driving a riffle advisory. residents were prompted to stay down from the bank, but there were no immediate reports of injuries or serious damage.

Initially, the Japan Meteorological Agency said the earthquake registered a primary magnitude of 6.9, but it later upgraded the primary magnitude to 7.1. The meteorological agency has predicted swells of over to 1 cadence along the southern seacoast of Kyushu and near the islet of Shikoku.

Ongoing reports of the quake

Seismologists were holding an emergency meeting to dissect whether the earthquake had affected the near Nankai Trough, the source of once ruinous earthquakes. Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi said officers were assessing possible injuries or serious damage, though none were incontinently reported. He prompted residents of the affected region to stay down from the bank.

Seismology Department functionary Shigeki Aoki advised that strong foreshocks could last for about a week. Japan’s NHK public TV said windows were broken at the Miyazaki field near the center. The field’s runway was temporarily closed for safety checks. NHK showed dozens of people gathering at a designated hilltop evacuation area.

The Nuclear Regulation Authority said all 12 nuclear reactors, including three that are presently operating, on Kyushu and Shikoku remained safe. Earthquakes in areas with nuclear power shops have been a major concern since a massive earthquake and riffle in March 2011 touched off the Fukushima nuclear disaster.

Japan sits on the Pacific “ Ring of Fire, ” a line of seismic faults encircling the Pacific Ocean, and is one of the world’s most earthquake-prone countries. An earthquake on Jan. 1 in Japan’s north-central region of Noto left more than 240 people dead.
