Tyson Foods, an American meat processor, is recalling approximately 30,000lb (13,608kg) of chicken nuggets after metal pieces were discovered in the product.

Tyson notified the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) and Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) stated that the nuggets were voluntarily recalled “out of an abundance of caution.”  The nuggets were manufactured in a single facility and distributed to various other distributors in nine different states: Alabama, California, Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia, and Wisconsin. On the back of the package, the nuggets subject to the recall are labeled P7211.

The nuggets, which come in 29-ounce bags, were manufactured on September 5 by a company in Berryville, Arkansas. The USDA urged consumers who had the nuggets in their freezers to discard them or return them to the store where they were purchased.

According to the USDA, there has only been one report of “minor oral injury associated with consumption of this product.”

The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) of the United States reported receiving one report of a minor oral injury. According to the FSIS, anyone who is concerned about an injury or illness should contact a healthcare provider.

Tyson said in a statement that a small number of customers reported finding small, pliable metal pieces in the product, so the company is recalling it out of caution. Customers who purchased the product should return it and contact the company.

FSIS quoted that “this is not the first time for Tyson, the largest meat producer in the United States by sales, has had to issue a recall. Last November, the company recalled ground beef after discovering “mirror-like” material in the meat. In 2019, the company recalled a batch of chicken nuggets after customers discovered blue rubber pieces inside. The same year, it recalled millions of pounds of chicken strips due to concerns that they were tainted with metal.

Tyson will close a number of chicken processing plants in the United States by the end of 2023 due to a drop in demand. However, as the price of beef and pork rose above the price of chicken, many consumers switched to the cheaper poultry. This raised hopes that the recent surge in demand would boost food company profits. Tyson is due in releasing its most recent quarterly earnings report on November 13th.

FSIS officials informed in a press note that “Tyson Consumer Relations can be contacted at (855)-382-3101, if you have any questions about the recall. Members of the press and media people who have any questions about the recall should contact Laura Burns, Tyson Foods, Inc.’s Vice President of External Communications, at (479)-719-9890” they stated.

FSIS also informs the public that they conduct any recall effectiveness checks on a regular basis to ensure that recalling companies notify their customers of the recall and that steps are taken to ensure that the product is no longer available to consumers in any form. Also the retail distribution lists were also posted on the FSIS website when they become available at the FSIS recall website. People can make use of it to be more aware about the recall of food products.
