Amit Shah, the Union Home Minister, has expressed the intention to implement a Uniform Civil Code for the entire country within the next five years if the BJP stays in power. He emphasized the need for extensive consultations with all stakeholders before putting it into effect. Additionally, he mentioned the government’s plan to introduce ‘One Nation, One Election’ in the next term. This would involve holding all elections across the nation simultaneously.
Amit Shah mentioned that considering the option of rescheduling elections is possible. He pointed out that if one election is moved earlier, it could be arranged. However, he also acknowledged the challenges associated with such a change, particularly regarding students’ vacations. Shah noted that over time, the Lok Sabha elections have tended to fall during the summer period.
Shah discussed the Uniform Civil Code, highlighting that it’s a responsibility entrusted to them, the Parliament, and the state legislatures since the time of independence by the framers of the Constitution.
The principles set by the Constituent Assembly include the Uniform Civil Code, according to Shah. He pointed out that even back then, legal experts like KM Munshi, Rajendra Babu, and Ambedkar had advocated for laws without religious bias in a secular nation. Shah emphasized the importance of having a Uniform Civil Code. He mentioned that the BJP has initiated an experiment in Uttarakhand, where it holds a majority government, regarding this matter since it falls under the jurisdiction of both the states and the Centre.
Shah expressed his belief in the significance of the Uniform Civil Code as a fundamental reform impacting society, law, and religion. He suggested that the law introduced by the Uttarakhand government should be carefully examined from both social and legal perspectives. Shah also highlighted the importance of consulting religious leaders in this matter.
What Amit Shah implied is that there needs to be a thorough discussion on this matter. If there are any necessary adjustments to be made to the model law proposed by the Uttarakhand government, they should be made after this extensive debate. This is crucial because legal challenges might arise, and the judiciary’s perspective will also play a role in shaping the outcome.
The home minister implied that both the state legislatures and the Parliament must give serious thought to this matter and pass a law. He said that that’s why it’s stated in the BJP’s manifesto that they are committed to implementing a Uniform Civil Code nationwide.
When asked if it could be achieved within the next five years, Shah affirmed that it would indeed be accomplished within that timeframe. He mentioned that five years is ample time for this plan.
Regarding simultaneous elections, Shah expressed the intention to strive for ‘One Nation, One Election’. He emphasized the importance of discussing this matter further. He mentioned his involvement in the committee formed by the Prime Minister, which submitted its report. Shah stressed that the time has come for elections to be held simultaneously across the nation.
Additionally, the Home Minister highlighted a promise made in the BJP manifesto to establish a unified electoral roll for all levels of elections.
