UK Elections 2024 is set on July 4th where british voters are going to elect their new Prime Minister and Parliament. Political analysts have predicted that Rishi Sunak’s Conservative Party is going to lose big time. The election polls show a slim chance of the sitting PM to come back to power. He might become the first sitting PM to lose his own seat in the Parliament.
A massive Labour landslide will be a big transition to British politics. As Conservative Party has been leading the British Parliament more frequently than any other party in the UK. Britain is set to elect a new party in power after 14 years of Conservative rule. These 14 years have been marked with political and economic turmoil.
Why these Predictions and Opinion Polls?
Since Brexit Britain has been facing political uncertainty. In 2019, Boris Johnson won by a huge margin by promising Britain’s exit from the European Union. He remained in power for three years and was removed from the office after the Partygate scandal during the pandemic lockdown.
Next PM from the conservative party, Liz Truss’s tenure was too short-just 49 days. Her so-called economic reforms sent the market into turmoil. She resigned after the disastrous tax cutting mini-budget that rocked Britain’s economy into further abyss.
Then came the next PM Rishi Sunak, richest PM ever and most unpopular leader. He failed to restore faith in Tories. The most illustrative failure was incompetence in handling the Ukraine conflict. But, ultimately the biggest problem facing the Tory party is a policy problem, with the economy in a bad state.
Govt public services have been falling apart. People are suffering from multiple stresses, including huge inflation, job losses and deteriorating living standards. His wife claimed non-domicile tax status which allowed her to avoid paying UK taxes, even as he raised taxes for others.
Sunak’s policy of sending illegal immigrants and asylum-seekers to Rwanda had created controversy. The deport policy seemed to many as inhumane and ineffective. On key environmental policies, Sunak has come up short. He has backtracked on Climate policies, vowing on commitments of net zero while dismantling many of the policies on electric vehicles and public transport that were needed to get there.
Keir Starmer’s manifesto for the UK general elections 2024
Keir Starmer is the leader of the Labour Party, all set to become the next Prime Minister of the UK. Elected as Party’s leader in 2020 after the party’s worst result in preceding elections (2017 and 2019). He has promised to be the agent of change that Britain needs. Under his leadership the party has pledged to become a party of economic responsibility. He plans to kickstart economic growth and stability by reforming Britain’s economy.
According to Labour’s manifesto the party has vowed a tax lock for working people- a pledge not to raise rates of income tax, national insurance and VAT. Even the Corporation tax will be capped at the current level of 25%. They are set to unleash an investment with a new National Wealth Fund to support transition to green energy and make Britain a clean energy superpower.
They have promised to build a National Health Service fit for the future which was under great stress during the Pandemic and cut its waiting times. They are determined to put the UK once again as an important player in the international arena. They will try to reconnect with their alliances and forge new partnerships.
