UNICEF issues emergency call for mpox vaccines to support crisis-hit countries

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has issued an emergency tender to secure mpox vaccines for crisis-hit countries in collaboration with the Gavi vaccine alliance, Africa CDC and the World Health Organization, the organizations said in a joint statement on Saturday.

Depending on the production capacity of manufacturers, agreements for up to 12 million doses through 2025 can be made, according to the statement.

UNICEF, in collaboration with Africa CDC, Gavi, and the World Health Organization( WHO), has issued a critical request to secure mpox vaccines for countries oppressively affected by the outbreak. This move aims to snappily supply vaccines to areas in critical need.

The exigency tender involves setting up agreements with vaccine manufacturers, allowing UNICEF to buy and deliver vaccines without detention once backing, demand, and nonsupervisory blessings are verified. Depending on product capacity, up to 12 million boluses could be secured through 2025.

This action comes in response to a severe mpox outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which has reported over 18,000 suspected cases and 629 deaths this time alone. The outbreak has also spread to bordering countries, egging the WHO to declare mpox a global health exigency.

Jean Kaseya, Director General of Africa CDC, emphasized the need for nippy and indifferent distribution of vaccines across the mainland. Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove of WHO stressed that a coordinated global trouble is essential to help the complaint from spreading further and getting an indeed lesser trouble.
