Unilever’s Sunlight uses 100% plant-based technology.

Sunlight’s new RhamnoClean technology has changed how we formulate handwashing liquid.  Director of Global R&D for Dishwasher Judisha Naidoo outlines the superior features and inventive origins of this specific product line. Unilever scientists have spent years trying to find a perfect formula for sunlight dishwashing liquid so that it delivers superior performance while using 100% plant-based renewable and biodegradable cleaning ingredients. Rhamnoclean claims the result to be a patented technological breakthrough.

The traditional dish wash products included surfactants a chemical that can create form and lift grease;  since the level of petrochemicals in surf Excel Unilever has tried to find an alternative that could wash dishes as well as best perform and deliver maximum satisfaction to their customers by providing additional benefits and moreover it should be made from renewable ingredients. In 2017 Unilever developed a 100% natural biodegradable and renewable biosurfactant that delivers outstanding performance to customers. It was developed in collaboration with Ebonic a global leader in biotechnology.

In 2019, Unilever’s Quix dishwashing liquid had its technological debut in Chile.  Further trials version were conducted in Vietnam in 2021 and in Indonesia and Thailand the preceding year. Following the success of the product Unilever is now planning to launch Rhamnoclean technology powered by Ramnolipid, across their sunlight hand dish wash premium range, Sunlight Plus. To meet the needs, ebonic has built a state-of-the-art production facility at its factory in Slovakia which is the world’s first industrial scale plan for creating Rhamnolipids.

WHY DID THE COMPANY TAKE SUCH MEASURES ?

Now looking at why the company developed this particular kind of technology, through extensive research the company has been trying to have a deep understanding of the various needs of consumers who increasingly look for differentiated products without compromising on performance. The essential component that Customers value natural ingredients without sacrificing hygiene are catered to by Rhamnolipid.

On the other hand consumers consider safety as a priority and the real concern arises when traces of chemical residue are left on dishes after washing with chemicals; making them harmful to humans. Rhamnoclean technology makes it safe even for baby dishes. This technology has even passed the dermatological test to be gentle on the skin and hence actually hands feel more moisturized after use unlike the dryness and itchiness caused by normal chemical washing liquids.

To conclude in a nutshell, FMCG giants like Unilever are moving towards sustainable goals to capture the hearts of consumers and increase consumer satisfaction through the delivery of high-quality materials that do not harm the environment.
