In a significant move aimed at enhancing agricultural productivity and ensuring food security for the middle class, the Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved a budget allocation of ₹1,01,321 crore for two key schemes: the PM-Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (PM-RKVY) and the Krishonnati Yojana. The cabinet meeting, held on Thursday, outlined a series of initiatives designed to bolster farmers’ income while promoting sustainable agricultural practices across the nation.

Focus on Agricultural Productivity

The PM-RKVY scheme will prioritize enhancing agricultural productivity through several focused measures. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasized the importance of Soil Health and Fertility, Rainfed Area Development, and Agricultural Mechanization as integral components of the program. Additionally, the scheme will promote organic farming through the ‘Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana‘, along with innovative programs such as the Accelerator Fund for Agri Start-ups. These initiatives aim to improve the agricultural value chain while leveraging technology to maximize output and efficiency.

The Krishonnati Yojana, a parallel initiative, seeks to support broader agricultural development with programs including the National Food Security and Nutrition Mission, the Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture, and the Sub-Mission on Agriculture Extension. These measures reflect the government’s commitment to increasing food security while enhancing the livelihoods of farmers.

National Mission on Edible Oils

In another significant development, the Cabinet approved the National Mission on Edible Oils – Oilseeds (NMEO-Oilseeds), which aims to achieve self-reliance in oilseed production. With an allocated budget of ₹10,103 crore, this seven-year initiative focuses on boosting domestic oilseed production to reduce reliance on imports and enhance food security. The government’s concerted efforts in this direction are anticipated to make a substantial impact on the country’s agricultural landscape.

Chennai Metro Phase-2 Approved

Highlighting urban infrastructure development, the Cabinet also approved the Phase 2 of Chennai Metro, with a project cost of ₹63,246 crore. This expansion will cover three corridors spanning a length of 119 km and is expected to increase daily passenger capacity by 13 lakh. The project will be jointly executed by the state and central governments, showcasing a collaborative approach to urban transit solutions.

India Joins Global Energy Efficiency Hub

In a significant international development, India has joined the Energy Efficiency Hub under the International Energy Agency (IEA). This strategic collaboration includes major global players such as the United States, China, and Germany, and aims to enhance global energy efficiency efforts. By joining this initiative, India seeks to foster international cooperation in improving energy efficiency practices and contributing to sustainable development goals.

Recognition for Classical Languages

In a move to promote India’s linguistic diversity, the government has added five languages to the ‘classical languages’ category. The newly recognized languages include Marathi, Pali, Prakrit, Assamese, and Bengali. This decision underscores the cultural heritage of these languages and aims to promote their preservation and usage in educational and cultural contexts.

Employees Welfare Initiatives

On the employees’ front, the Cabinet approved a modified Productivity Linked Reward Scheme for 20,704 employees of Major Port Authorities and Dock Labour Board Employees, with a financial implication of ₹200 crore from 2020-21 to 2025-26. Additionally, a Productivity Linked Bonus (PLB) of ₹2,029 crore has been announced for Indian Railways employees, reflecting the government’s acknowledgment of their exceptional performance. This bonus, equating to 78 days’ worth of pay, will benefit over 11 lakh railway employees across various departments.

The Union Cabinet’s recent decisions reflect a comprehensive approach to enhancing agricultural productivity, urban infrastructure, energy efficiency, and employee welfare. These initiatives not only aim to improve the livelihood of farmers and the middle class but also contribute to India’s overall development and self-sufficiency. The government’s proactive measures signify a commitment to addressing pressing national issues while fostering growth and sustainability in various sectors.
